That was my thought as a contributing factor. That and inexperience. I know a lot of people that bought boats as some sort of mid-life crisis, and then realized what upkeep and maintenance for them would be. So they stayed in the garage, very rarely leaving to fulfill their intended purpose. Now along comes this call to bring your boat out for this parade. Suddenly these money sinks in the garage can be used to show support for a cause, so out they come. They’ll be fine for a quick run across the lake, right? ---

Of course they can file claims if they have insurance. Being a recreational boater by definition requires using a boat for unnecessary and dangerous purposes. Claims can’t be denied on those grounds. ETA: I specified ‘boater’ instead of ‘boat owner’. Many boat owners never put their boats or anyone else in danger by keeping them out of the water almost all of the time. Most private recreational boats go in the water as often as you use that gym membership. ---

I wouldn’t think a car crash with Trump bumper stickers on the car is funny either. I’m sure any little kids who happened to onboard in a sinking boat just thinks the whole thing is a barrel of monkeys.
