For when I’m going megalomaniacally mad, The Imperial March from star wars. “thus spake zarathrustra” by strauss. Remember that scene where the monkey invents tool use in 2001: A Space odyssel and all the monkeys start using bones to hunt and kill animals. That would be the scene and music running through my head if I went absolutely violently mad. If I ever decided to do something unutterably evil in my political career just to benefit myself - say, if I were working in the state department and began advising “pre-emptive” war, the Guns and Roses cover of Sympathy for the Devil. To me, it’s all about evil that seems rational, even charismatic, but has that bit of gibbering insanity to it. The Imperial March would be good for political evil and insanity too, though. “Lord Excellent, the Enterprise is nearing the Syrian coast. What are your orders?” “Is my press conference ready, Admiral?” “Yes, my lord.” “Then proceed with the attack, Admiral. No mistakes, no excuses.” “Yes, lord Excellent.” A man can dream, can’t he? That song by Green Day- “Basket Case.” And I can’t help but connect “Crazy” by Patsy Cline with real live insanity, after watching that episode of “The Simpsons” where Marge is put on hold with that song, when Homer gets institutionalized, for wearing a pink shirt. ---

I like “I Don’t Like Mondays” by the Boomtown Rats, for when I know I’m about to snap with frustration/anger but I can stop myself and laugh about it (a little). When I feel so stressed out I think I could cry, I like “Holiday” by Jimmy Buffett (off the otherwise nearly dreadful “Banana Wind” album). ---

For its soothing effects, I’d throw on **Dark Side of the Moon** , specifically Us and Them (I prefer the Gilmour-era Floyd sound). If you want some upbeat craziness (and I know you do), can’t go wrong with the Ramones’ **Teenage Lobotomy** , Operation Ivy’s **The Crowd** or Goldfinger’s version of **99 Red Balloons** ---

If you’re talking about the kind of lunacy where you jump up and down a lot and go “blibble-blibble-blibble” with your finger and lips, may I suggest Raymond Scott or Spike Jones? (Raymond Scott was a jazz composer whose works were incorporated into a lot of Warner Bros. cartoon soundtracks. His most recognizable piece is probably “Powerhouse” – DUN dun dun dun DUN dun dun dun, DUN dun dun dun DUN dun dun dun…) ---
