Sorry, darlin’, but it is a law in 49 states that these two should never appear together on any list, at any time. You’ve been busted by the music police.

A man of taste!

I am a person of very eclectic (not to say eccentric) tastes.

What about expensive? Yes, you are eclectic, but I’m the first person in this thread to include rock, jazz, and classical!

I had heard Money Maker but it never really impressed me - then I picked up a copy of Southern Harmony & Musical Companion and was absolutely blown away.

*What is your favorite song by #4?

Wow - that’s tough. I’ll go with Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite, but it could be any of 20 or 30 songs. They were the greatest songwriters ever - how can you really decide?

*How many times have you seen #9 live?

Twice

*Is there a song by #2 that makes you sad?
If 6 was 9

“Don’t nobody know what I’m talkin’ about

*When did you first get into #1?
Roughly 1984-85

*How did you get into #3?
My family took a vacation driving across the country when I was about 12 (sounds like a bad Chevy Chase movie, and in reality it was even worse). We listened to Who’s Next more times than I can count, and I was hooked.

“Even Flow”

*How many times have you seen #9 live?

“North Country”

*What is your favorite song of #8?
“Bad”

*What kind of impact has #1 left on your life?
Really made me appreciate what would later be labelled as “Alt-Country”. It also opened me up to Son Volt and Wilco later on. I think UT may have been one fo the most underappreciated bands ever.

“Standing too soon, Shoulders high, in the wind…
Heaven assumed, shoulders high, in the wind…”

*How many times have you seen #4 live?

In college. I went to college in central Illinois, and UT was beginning to get radio play. The first time I heard a UT song, it was a cover of “Anodyne” by a cover band.

*How did you get into #3?
My mom was (and is) a huge Beatles freak. I feel gratitude that she still proclaims her devotion as a George fan over John and Paul. <I think George was underrated, and possibly more talented than Paul…probably not John, though>

*What is your favorite song by #4?
“Phantom Limb”. Just very lyrical, and super-catchy.

*How many times have you seen #9 live?
Twice.

*Is there a song by #2 that makes you sad?
Most of the 2nd half of Girlfriend, some of Altered Beast, and pieces of Living Things.

*What is your favorite song of #1?
I would say it’s still “Anodyne”, and any of a number of their more ‘rollicking’ songs as well.

*How did you become a fan of #10?
I think I heard him on a local station first (‘Hazey Jane’???), and then the VW “Pink Moon” song came out. His albums were re-issued, and I snapped them up.

Great topic, btw.

*What is your favorite song of #8?
Geez, that’s a hard one…probably “Oh My Golly!”

*What kind of impact has #1 left on your life?
Man, they were my first “favorite band EVER.” They were one of the first bands whose songs I learned to play, and when I started writing my own music, they were the band I had to consciously try NOT to copy. Massive influence on me as a music listener and a musician.

*What is your favorite lyric of #5?
Stay glued to your TV set – “Ex Lion Tamer”

*How many times have you seen #4 live?
Zero. I need to go before they break up for good.

“Clean Sheets”

*When did you first get into #1?
1986.

*How did you get into #3?
I went to a new school for junior high, and some of my new friends had older siblings who were into punk rock (I’m the oldest in my family). The Ramones came with that.

*What is your favorite song by #4?
“Heading Out To The Highway”

*How many times have you seen #9 live?

*What is your favorite song of #1?
“Groovy Times”

*How did you become a fan of #10?
Hah. I lined up to buy their debut EP the day it came out. I was a Minor Threat fan already and my friends and I were dying to hear the new project. We were not disappointed.

*What was the first song you ever heard by #6? - “It’s A Shame”

*What is your favorite song of #8? - “Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)” (Stockhiolm, 1-9-69 2nd show)

*What kind of impact has #1 left on your life? - When I saw them on Ed Sullivan, I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I learned to play drums because of Ringo, and when I first heard “Come Together,” it opened up a whole new world to me, and I soon learned to play bass and guitar because of it. I wanted to hear everything by them that there was, and after I bought all the albums and singles, I discovered bootlegs. I read everything I could find on them, and started keeping notes on their records, before there was a book on the subject. I’ve compiled an encyclopedia of data on them over 38 years. I delved into their roots and learned, then acquired, music by hundreds, then thousands of artists because of them. I learned studio production techniques from their records. I wanted to know how they did that.

*What is your favorite lyric of #5? - Sorry, Aretha didn’t write her own lyics.

*How many times have you seen #4 live? - None. I don’t even know if they ever played where I lived in Canada.

*What is your favourite song by #7? - Probably “Comfortably Numb.”

*Is there any song by #3 that makes you sad? - “Hello My Old Friend.” It’s a masterwork, and the pinnacle of Jeff Lynne’s emulation of George Martin’s production. It’s so closely patterened after “I Am The Walrus” that they never issued it until the “Afterglow” box set as a rarity. I’m sad that John Lennon never got to hear it. I’m sad more people have never heard it. I’m sad that it’s not their best known track.

*What is your favorite song by #9? - Oh, that’s hard. “This One.” No, “It’s Not True.” No, “Rough Ride.” No, “I’m Carrying.” I can’t answer this question!

*When did you first get into #1? - February 9th, 1964.

*How did you get into #3? - I heard “Roll Over Beethoven” on the radio, along with the rest of their hits in order, then bought “Ole ELO” first, and the rest later.

*What is your favorite song by #4? - “Heroes And Villains”

*How many times have you seen #9 live? - Three. Twice in Toronto, once in Tampa.

*Is there a song by #2 that makes you sad? - Geez, I don’t think there’s a sad song anywhere in Dave Edmunds’ whole canon!

*What is your favorite song of #1? - “Come Together”

*How did you become a fan of #10? - I went to a guy’s house in 1978, where we smoked way too much hash, and he played me “In The Court Of The Crimson King” on his $4000 speakers. Three years later, they put out “Discipline” and I was immediately taken by everything on it. I got free tickets to see them on that tour, and delved into the rest of their catalogue after that.

Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
The Beatles
The Grateful Dead
Bob Marley
The Who
Yes
ZZ Top
Queen
Lynyrd Skynyrd

*What was the first song you ever heard by #6?
I really have no idea, but it was probably “My Generation” or “Pinball Wizard”

*What is your favorite song of #8?
“Waitin’ for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago”

*What kind of impact has #1 left on your life?
I don’t know that any of these bands have had a significant “impact” on my life. They were my introduction into “heavy metal”, and the second band that I really got into (The Beatles being first)

*What is your favorite lyric of #5?
“I’m sick and tired of your ism schisms
Die and go to heaven in Jesus’ name, Lord
We know and we understand
Almighty God is a living man
You can fool some people sometimes
But you can’t fool all the people all the time
So now we see the light
We gonna stand up for our right”
-Get Up, Stand Up

BTW, I am Catholic

*How many times have you seen #4 live?
Never. Not once. Not any of the roughly 973 times they were in town. And no, I’m not bitter about it at all, thankyouverymuch

*What is your favorite song by #7?
“Wondrous Stories”

*Is there any song by #3 that makes you sad?
“She’s Leaving Home”

*What is your favorite song by #9?
“You’re My Best Friend”

*When did you first get into #1?
1981

*How did you get into #3?
I was 13 when John Lennon was shot. I had heard of The Beatles, but really didn’t know anything about them, and wasn’t very much into music at all at the time. I was listening to the radio when the news came across, and of course the station played Beatles/Lennon music all night long. I was hooked by the time I went to bed

*What is your favorite song by #4?
“Ripple”

*How many times have you seen #9 live?
Never. (Yes, I do go actually to concerts. I guess it doesn’t help that many of my favorite bands had broken up before I was old enough to have seen them.)

*Is there a song by #2 that makes you sad?
I don’t think so. Pink Floyd can give me a number of emotions, but sadness isn’t one of them.

*What is your favorite song of #1?
“Stairway to Heaven” Yes, I know it’s cliche. What can I say?

*How did you become a fan of #10?
I discovered them fairly early on in my musical education. It started with the Beatles (as mentioned above) and moved quickly into “Classic Rock”, which is heavily '70’s influenced. I liked the guitar work combined with the honky-tonk piano feel. Southern Rock is probably my favorite sub-genre of music.
