a GIMMICK poster. We have these over at Smile and Act Nice. Basically, your gimmick poster has one schtick that he/she repeats over and over-and it’s a “part of that poster.” Think of Sweet Sue and her little dolls-that would be what you call a “gimmick.”

It’s no intended to be trolling, but to assume a pose, or a charicature, if you will.

> However, if you are so inclined to listen to a word of advice from a decidedly uncool matronly-type person, I would ask you to take the time to think this one over. It is true that gay is one of those words that means different things to different people in various contexts. I believe you are being truthful when you explain that you don’t use it to make any negative comment on homosexuality, but rather a Fred Flintstonesque goofiness. So, you might take up the fight and continue to use it that way on these boards. However, keep in mind that isn’t an issue of who is right and who is wrong. Clearly, some people feel differently about this than you do, and when you use it to show disdain for something, you are causing genuine hurt and distress to many people in this community.

I see your point. While my usage was kosher, perhaps it’s more trouble than it’s worth. Too many cats around here can’t interpret the lingo.

Now we’re talkin’. Once you get deep into the beats and funk, they begin to take over everything you do, including posting. Anyone interested: I am playing Memorial Day at this place “Jilliard” on 56th between 5th and 6th. It aint a dance party, like I usually do. This is going to be with a band. It’s kind of experimental. No rehearsal just improvised jamming. I’ll have my sampler and records. Should be cool. Kind of a funk, breakbeat type of thing. 7:00 PM (After the barbeque!)

Some people started bringing up violence. I hate violence. It is one of the ugliest things goin. That’s what I was addressing. There is an old saying about taking fights to the stage. Battle on stage and everyone goes home at nite to battle another day. The ignorant implication of violent confrontation (Damn that rhymes somethin’ nice; I’ll have to use that) should be left at home.

Actually, that’s what happens when you go to college. It’s called a real career. Dream all you want DJ, dream of what you will never have.

…and I thought Cyk was crazy for putting $50,000. He’ll be making much more than that. 🙂

You CLEAR more than $50K a year doing DJ work? That means you must be knocking down around $1400/week before taxes. Impressive. I thought artists were supposed to suffer for their muse.

No, for the last 6 years I work at an investment bank as well. Combined income from acting/djing/temping comes in around $60,000 after taxes. Now I’ve shared. happy? I definately suffer. I work 50 hours a week at my “real job” and then spin a couple nights a week. Needless to say there are alot of days with no sleep.

See, part of the problem here, dalovindj, is that you can talk until you’re blue in the face about what this word and that word mean among “your crowd,” but here, you ain’t among “your crowd.” You’re among a diverse group of people, many of whom are more than a little put off with hearing the word “gay” used as an insult. Cripes, try and look at something from another side, you know?

As far as the rest of it, who the fuck cares what kind of music someone listens to? I don’t listen to a lot of hip-hop. Not my cup of tea. Sure, I’ve got some P-Funk albums from when I was a teenager, and some Public Enemy, and some Beasties, and some other stuff. But it’s not what I listen to 99% of the time. What freakin’ difference does it make? If you like it, listen to it. If you don’t, don’t.

And I don’t care how much money someone makes. An asshole with a big bank account is still an asshole, and a pauper who is cool is cool no matter what.

Not yet. I was thinking ‘phat beat’ or ‘dope beat’ to start with, but I need a title that’ll grab people’s attention. Any ideas?

I think the basic story will be an aspiring dj struggling to make it. There’s gotta be a love interest (someone he meets while spinning?) and a rival - the climax can be the stage battle between the two djs. Maybe I can put a “independent artist vs The Man” spin on it, too; maybe have the competing dj be a RIAA-sponsored guy, and the moral of the story is that if you stay true to yourself, you can accomplish anything.

(Btw- the name starts with a lower-case l, not a capital I. Mess it up again and I’ll slash your tires.)

Yeah. I like it. The story of a young dj with a rough exterior, but a heart of gold, tryin’ to make it in this Man’s world. Along the way he has to do some jobs he would prefer not to. He has to deal with all the ignorant people claiming “his instrument isn’t an instrument”, and “he isn’t a musician” and “his music isn’t music”. In the end with hard work, dedication, and a whole lotta beats he triumphs over adversity and shows up the “Corporate” sponsored dj with his underground skillz. You’ll definately need a girl. maybe 2. A rough, tough inner city chic, and a girl new to the city who just loves hip-hop (can anyone say cat-fight?).

Also, a real jerk of a boss at his day job to represent all the haters: “Get to work. Turn off that noise. Stick with us and some day you just may make $90,000 a year. But you’ll have to kiss alot of ass first so back to work!”. In the end he quits the “real job”, get’s the girl, and makes millions selling records. If you don’t like happy endings and you want to make it a dark independent sort of film, then right after he gets all that . . .he get’s shot! (ala Scott La Rock: R.I.P.)? Sounds dope. How about:

“The Tables Turn”

We’ll make millions.

The only “Fact” that I see to be evident is that your gonna end up in a dull job making average wages. To be honest, I could care less. This has nothing to do with the OP. It’s in some weird way connected to your dislike of the way I use the word “gay”, which you defended by implying that I would be in a position with a lower salary than you will someday have, which turned out to not be true. freak. just another crazy fool.

Oh, and I’m not a banker, I am just working at a bank until I can support myself on art alone. Yes, it is art that I find important, and not cash. Money is a good tool, but it should not be the end-all be all. I have had a ton of cash in my pocket with a phat pad (like these days), and I have also been broke and homeless (although I prefer the term couch surfer). No matter what I had fun, and listened to the hip-hop real loud.

Good stuff!

I’m thinking we’ll start with the happy ending - he gets the girl, makes millions, mad props all around. We’ve gotta go with the happy ending if we want a wide release - how many independent movies with dark endings really rake in the cash? I’d want to write and film the darker ending, though, and we can have that on the DVD as an alternate ending. That’ll give the fan base a reason to buy the DVD, and we’ll drop a few hints that we preferred one ending over the other, and let the fans argue which one was the best.

“The Tables Turn” is good, but it has that “As The World Turns” feel to it, sorta soap-operaish. Any other ideas?
