Movies about societal collapse do speak to this rat race, upon which contemporary society is based. What happens when familiar structures are no longer there for us to climb upon? The rat race is one of those structures. Some writers imagine a transition to total chaos, others to tribalism, sometimes a combination of the two.

I personally think that the apocalypse has been underway for decades and we will not recognize it until we are decades after it fades out. There is a certain appeal to a cathartic apocalypse, but time and nature often do not give is what we want.

I’ve always thought that one of the benefits of zombies as an enemies is that you don’t have to feel guilty killing them. You don’t have to worry that politics will shift and the group you’re fighting will become allies.
