According to 11alive Newslink, the niece claimed the gun was registered by permit. I don’t find that all that unusual; several of my grand-aunts, all widowed women in their 70s, 80s and 90s – each have handguns for their protection.
The old woman actually shot all three of the cops, shooting one dead center in the chest. Cop would have been dead if not for the vest.
A bad deal all around. If I was in that situation, I would have shot, so I cannot blame Granny.
It is easy to second-guess the police, they could have served the warrant in a better way no doubt, but they have an SOP or some sort and were doing their job like they have a thousand times before.
Shows you what a nasty job the police have. Even Good Guys might hurt you.
I know it’s the least of consolations, but like someone else said, for her to hit 3 poised and ready, trained cops, before they took her out… old lady had mad skilz.
One of the articles said the niece just talked to her about a nearby 72 y.o nearby getting raped. I’m picturing a woman with a gun, “on point”, officers with faulty intell, just all combining for a very bad result. Just a very sad situation. One of those sites also had an article about outrage over 12 police shootings in that county over the last year. Maybe the cops are just a little too gung-ho. I don’t know. What a Police State we all live in these days…

on and on
I’d like to know how they executed the search warrant. I’ve seen plenty of drug raids on TV where they yell “Police! Search Warrant!” and one nanosecond later, they are smashing down the door and storming the house.
I dimly remember the subject of “no-knock” warrants being debated in the courts as part of the War on (some) Drugs. Have they become standard practice, rather than an exception?
This woman managed to hit 3 people who, it would appear, she thought were invading her house. What makes you think she was an unsuitable person to have a gun?
This is just a shame. Can I ask what the logic is behind plainclothes police making a raid on a house? Surely it’d be a lot better to have them in very distinct uniforms?
Supposedly this wasn’t a raid, they were just delivering a warrant. Still, I wonder when “kicking the door in” somes under SOP for dropping off a warrant. Especially since the vast majority of the houses over here have barred doors and windows.
I am also wondering whose name was on the warrant.
Yes: if it’s necessary for police to break into houses like this, they should be immediately recognisable as police. It’s basically the same reason why the military are required to wear uniforms: if the state allows certain people to carry out violent activity that ordinary citizens are not allowed to, their status allowing this should be very visible. Plain clothes are fine for surveillance or detective work, but not for this sort of thing.
She may have some sensory impairment but it seems she was lucid and capable. Family members said she was “in good health.” She was living alone, which is generally a sign of independence. She was going to have her niece over for Thanksgiving in her home. She could relate current events like the 72-year old missionary who was raped and killed 5 miles from her home. She nailed all three cops – one in the chest, one in the face (superficial wound), one in the thigh.
Seems to me if the woman had hearing loss or any other impairments the family would be crying foul about the police killing a helpless woman.
I’m wondering more and more about the wisdom of plainclothes police presenting drug warrants at night in a bad neighborhood. I’m wondering who gave the police the tip that there were drugs in the house of an elderly woman apparently living alone.
Why would the police endanger themselves like that? It seems a uniformed officer could have driven up during daylight hours, figured there was someone home and asked for uniformed backup.
I’m wondering about the timing of all this, too. My mother is nearly 83, and it takes her some time to get up from her chair and to get to the door if someone knocks. Most people have given up and left by the time she gets there. This woman must have been sitting there with the weapon in her lap if she started shooting only a few seconds after they knocked (if they did the knock, yell, wait three seconds then burst in the door thing). What if she had been in the bathroom? Not everyone can get to the door in 15 seconds!
But still, to hit three officers? And why can they say without a doubt they were at the address that was on the warrant, but they can’t say who the warrant was for? Unless they just don’t want to mention the name in case they can still catch that person, wherever that person is?
I think they’d be less likely to hear “granny killer”, and more likely to hear “Don’t mess with me, I’ll send my deaf and blind Aunt Matilda over to pop a cap in your ass.”
If it turns out that it’s yet another case of the police raiding the wrong house, I hope the family of the woman sues Atlanta into the Stone Age in retribution.
