In LDS theology, their non-Mormon ancestors are in “Spirit Prison”, which translates better as “purgatory” than “hell” (although LDS scripture calls it “hell”, it has little in common with mainstream Christian hell). Dead Mormons visit Spirit Prison to preach the LDS gospel, and if a prisoner converts he awaits baptism. Having no physical body to dunk, he waits for a proxy baptism performed by the living. ---
