I really am sorry, because I know that someone with the name will read this, and this is about a word, not a person, but I can’t contain this any more. It was bad enough when it was just Rory Kennedy, but THEN along came Rory McEllroy. Now [here comes Rory Farquharson](https://slate.com/human-interest/2018/09/malia-obama-boyfriend-rory-farquharson-harvard-tabloids.html) to inflict still more of Roriness on us all. What is it, all you Rorys, with a name that sounds like something Scooby-Doo would say? (“Ruh-Roh! Rory!”) Will you tell me a story while riding a lorry with a guy named Corey who is a hoary Tory? Gah! :mad::mad::mad: ---

How do you get “Rory” from “Lorelai” (Gilmore)? ---

I would presume the same way you get Bill from William, Dick from Richard, Peggy from Margaret, etc. English is fun but weird. ---

I watch the Arrowverse shows with my kid, who noted that one of the teamups had two guys named Rory: this one a Jewish superhero with a magic costume, and the other one a hard-drinking adventurer who excels at flamethrower marksmanship. Quoth the kid, _“What’ll happen if they call out for Rory?”_ ---

Well my daddy left home when I was four, he Really didn’t leave much to Ma and me Just this guitar and an empty bottle of Midori Now, I don’t blame him 'cause he run and hid But the meanest thing that he ever did Was before he left, he went and named me Rory ---

I’d chance my name to Rory if it meant I could play golf as well as Sabbatini or McIlroy. In fact, I’d change it if all it got me was the ability to drive the ball the way McIlroy can. ---
