Funny movie; made me hungry for lamb kebobs. (Andrea Martin’s character reacts to finding out that her niece’s WASP boyfriend is vegetarian by saying, “So we’ll have lamb!”) The characters were exaggerated, but in an affectionate way, with the kind of quirks you might find in any large family. Most Dads have at least one thing they do that makes no sense to their children, like harboring the believe that Windex is a wonderful topical remedy.
I just saw the film this weekend (which, according to the box office, so did a lot of other people!) I thought it was very good and I hope Andrea Martin’s name is remembered, come Oscar time!
I have a question.
Was it implied that the brother is gay? Unmarried, over 30, into art - NOT that all of the above necessarily means a guy is gay, but I was wondering if that was a sub-plot that never took off, or are they waiting to deal with it in the upcoming sequel:
My Big Fat Greek Honeymoon
(Seriously, that sequel is being discussed!)
Just wondering if anyone else picked up on the gay thing.
MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING was my favorite movie of the summer! There is so much love in this film! And so many laughs! Opa!
I just saw this on Saturday, and totally loved it. It made me homesick for my Polish in-laws up in Buffalo!
DMark, I thought the artist brother was gay too. There was mention in the movie that he would go out clubbing but you never saw him with a woman or mention of a woman. Since the movie was rife with all other types of stereotypes why not that one too?
I saw the movie this past weekend, and can confirm that the couches were indeed covered with clear plastic.
This is hilarious! The father with the Windex is memorable.
I agree with other posters that the national origin could be anything, including large Mexican or Filipino families. I did not see any gay references regarding Greeks. There were more of those in the movie with Gene Hackman, The Birdcage, thinking of the dinner plates.
I saw it this weekend.
It reminded me of the Italian side of my family, too. (I’m not Greek).
I thought the reason the brother was single wasn’t because he was gay, but because Toula had been being told she needed to find a “nice Greek boy” since she was fifteen, but Nick, at nearly 30 “had plenty of time.” Gender based double standard.
Never occurred to me that likes to draw meant gay. Perhaps I know too many straight artists.
I saw it Friday, with a friend who later had to write a report about the film and cultural diversity. JA! The movie reminded both of us about our family reunions in Puerto Rico.
Of course, this also made me wary of inviting any potential mates to visit my family…
