My daughter, she’s a vet tech , says never give up on a cat. My indoor kitty got out and was gone THREE weeks. I was sure she was dead. I cried so much. I looked everywhere I could think of. After three weeks she wandered up like nobodies business, a little skinnier but fine. ---

When I was a kid, the family cat disappeared for months. We couldn’t believe it when she showed up. ---

Cats are weird. When I was a kid, my best friend and next door neighbor moved with his family to a different part of the city about 3 miles away. He was heartbroken a few days after, when the family cat disappeared. I was astonished a few days after _that_, when the cat appeared in his old yard next door again. Apparently the cat got so confused by the move he needed to strike out for the territories and find his way back “home,” or else, he realized he’d always cared more about his old yard and house than about his people. ---

Probably the former. I’ve had a cat who was vehemently fixated on me try to take off for his previous living place, the day after I finally let him out a couple of weeks after we moved. (Previous Home was much further away than he apparently expected it to be, though he had the direction right. I found him, a couple of days later, hiding in a hedgerow in an upper field, in just about exactly the right direction but about 40 miles short – not counting a couple of large lakes in the way. I don’t know whether that was as far as he’d gotten, or whether he’d gone further and then turned back but couldn’t find the last portion of the route.) I wouldn’t let him out for another couple of weeks after that; but he never tried that again. ---

We had a cat appear in our barn years ago. We put out food and water for it. Took it for vaccines and castration. Gave it a name. Fast forward eight years. A little boy from up the road would come by offering labor (picking up sticks from the yard, raking leaves). My gf would pay him $5 a job (highway robbery). One day he was in the barn and saw our cat. He yelled, “Mister” and the cat came running. He remembered Mister from years before. It was the family cat, but his mom didn’t believe in cat food.
