My city is known for _______.

Nottingham, England.

Lace.

Bicycles.

Cigarettes.

Robin Hood.

A Female to Male ratio of 3/1.

The only city in the UK to have routine armed police patrols.

One of the most violent places in the UK (per capita).

Goose Fair

Home of the oldest professional football (soccer) league team in the world.

General William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army.

Lord Byron.

And, on the subject of celebrities, this lot

Portland, OR.

  • Rain.

See, I knew there were things I forgot. Also, The Weather Channel.

Don’t you guys have a real whiz-bang airport there?

Suburb of Boston:

Speed traps
Expensive real estate

Albuquerque

“Do you want Green or red on that”

A full season of Cops episodes

The worst drivers (no–really, I’ve lived in a lot of cities)

The most drunks

Covina:

–parts of the TV show Roswell are sometimes filmed downtown.

–the head-banging-in-the-car scene in the first Wayne’s World movie was also filmed here.

–very close to a portion of Route 66.

The place I live now:

    Mutton Barbeque

The place I grew up (which would not be mistaken for a city even by someone who had spent their whole life in the outback):

     Hometown of Keith Whitley

That’s a common misconception. Although it is called Denver IA they actually build it in Kansas.

Actually I am curious what Denver is known for other than our sports teams, I have no idea what most people think of when they think of Denver.

Toledo, Ohio

Mud Hens

Tony Packos

ex-Glass Capitol of the World

Art Museum–if you’re in that crowd

Seattle:

Rain
The Mariners
Microsoft (technically in Redmond but it’s close enough)

Kal, Nottingham is 75% female and one of the most violent places in the UK?

For me, Houston:

• Port of Houston

• The recently replaced Astrodome

• “Partly cloudy, hot and humid…”

• NASA

• The oil business is here

• Bayous

• Freeways

• Enron

ZZ Top

• Architecture

• Livestock Show & Rodeo

• Art museums

• Rapid growth

Detroit:

Major automotive center
Motown (the music style)
Kick-ass hockey team
Embarassing baseball and football teams
Horribly maintained roads and freeways

Newberg, Oregon, I’m told, was once in the Guiness book of records for having the most churches per capita of any small town in America. I haven’t ever been able to confirm this, but I think it’s pretty likely true.

That’s pretty much it.

Vancouver, BC:

Marijuana & rain. Not necessarily in that order.

Oh, and there’s that whole amazing cultural diversity and stunning natural beauty thing.

Being as I live in the rural portion of King County, Washington, I will use my hometown, Tacoma.

The Aroma.
The big wooden dome.
ehhhhh, did I say the Aroma?
The Narrows Bridge.
Ivan the gorilla. Oh, he’s gone.
The Aroma…

My city is known for its entire football team (except 2) getting killed in a plane crash back in the 70s.

And apparently Muhammed Ali ate spaghetti here once, too.

Two choices:

Hillsboro, VA:

Being the smallest independent city in Virginia (population 96!)

Being the birthplace of the mother of the Wright Brothers

Being the childhood home of Madeleine Albright

or…

Washington, DC

The capital of the United States

A screwed up city government (The sitting mayor just screwed up his petition drive and won’t be on the democratic primary ballot…no foolin’.)

Gucci Gulch (lobbyists and the law firms on K Street and environs)

The White House, the Capitol, and all the other government institutions.

Having museums and zoos that are completely free to the public.

Emptying out every August so the tourists can observe without all the silly ‘locals’.

Being better than Baltimore up the road.

A world-class subway system.

Being screwed out of a baseball team twice.

Matsuyama, Japan

  • Oldest hot spring in Japan (about 3000 years old)
  • Oranges and mandarins
  • Location for the popular Japanese novel “Bottchan”
  • Birthplace of Shiki, a famous Haiku poet
  • Sister city to Sacramento and Freiburg, Germany
  • Matsuyama Castle

Perth, Western Australia

  • Most isolated capital city in the world (and probably the most beautiful too)
  • Black swans
  • Kings Park
  • Swan Valley wineries
  • Home to one of the most progressive zoos in the world in terms of breeding/rearing endangered species
  • Home of the first team to wrench the America’s Cup away from the Yanks in 132 years (back in 1983)
