Tracking down a poster in real life because you have a beef with him is crossing a huge line. It’s seriously creepy. And actually bringing it here… I’ve reported this post, but in case the mods elect to not do anything due to its age, I wanted to let you know. ---

Yeah, he used to post under his real name and link to his RL facebook and escapades as reported in the local news. It’s not like anyone’s tracked him down outside the SDMB (in this case). ---

Fight fire with fire. Get a few friends who look like the FBI type. Get them to come to his house dressed in black suits in a black car. Knock on his door and demand to speak to him. If he doesn’t come out, have them sit in the car and point a weird device at his house for a few minutes, maybe pretend to bury something tiny in his yard by scratching at the grass and miming dropping something in the dirt. Next time he’s out in the front yard, get your friends to come back. Have a talk with him implying a lot of things and how the government knows what he’s doing and if he’s smart, he’ll leave you alone. Have them take pictures and make measurements “for the record”. Have them reassure him in a menacingly calm voice that everything will be “fine”. Smile. Next, see if someone you know has a windowless van you can park in front of his house for a few hours, bonus if it has a satellite dish on top that you can point. Even better if its in the middle of the night but you know he’s awake. Write a cryptic message and drop it in his mailbox. It doesn’t have to make sense and shouldn’t be threatening. Be as vague as possible. Allude that he’s doing everything just fine. Tell him he has nothing to worry about. Put up some fake cameras near your house pointing directly to his. Point them at his bedroom window, at his backyard, etc. If you see him in the front yard, stare at him and smile. Keep staring, drop whatever you’re doing. Then, write notes while looking at him, maybe type something in your phone. Pretend to dial someone and say to the other person “He’s here. Yes he is. I know”. Keep staring at him while you speak. End with “I understand, consider it done”. Then hurry back into the house as if you have something to do. Keep this up for a few weeks and he’ll be the one who wants to leave ---

UPDATE: Apparently, the potential buyer and my crazy neighbor really got into a loud verbal brawl that almost turned physical according to all the neighbors who went outside to check out the show. So they closed the deal and got out of Dodge. Next potential buyer is 3 brothers. My agent tells the buying agent that the guy next door wants the house to stay empty. If he gives you a problem, this is why. I’ve been keeping my fingers crossed, hoping I don’t get another phone call about crazy neighbor hijinks. The 3 brothers got a private inspection done. No complaints about crazy neighbors. A house appraiser was there, having no issues. No property damage has happened. The closing is moving along as it should with a sold date hopefully in ten more days. I don’t know if crazy guy has just given up, is intimidated by 3 guys, is plotting a seriously crazy move or maybe he’s dead in the house. I still can’t relax until I have signed purchase forms and cash in hand. ---

Aside from putting it in his mailbox directly, which IS illegal (just stamp and mail a letter instead), why would it be illegal / backfire? I mean, it’s unlikely to be helpful, but what would you see happening as a result, that might not happen anyway given the guy is seriously mentally ill? Re the latest update: good luck!!
