My mom just called. I knew what the call was as soon as the phone rang. He died about five minutes ago. ---

I’m so sorry, **Otto**. My dad died when he was in his early 50s, over 15 years ago, and I can still remember the crumpling feeling at the news, the disconnect of my reasoning for several minutes, the feeling of being lost. I’d tell you it gets better eventually, but that doesn’t matter at all right now. I could also tell you that he stays alive in important ways by you remembering him, teaching others things that he taught you, passing on stories of him - but that won’t help you now either, I suspect. So from one “fatherless child” to another, I am sorry for your loss and pain. ---

I’m so sorry **Otto**. My father died unexpectedly, some 30 years ago; my mom slipped quietly into a long-awaited, gentle death last October; either way, the immediate pain is dreadful. **Ferret Herder** said it all. ---

**Otto** , I offer my sincere condolences. Please, take care of yourself in there (I know you’ll be looking after your Mother, and everyone else) while you are getting through this? Drink plenty of water, eat even if it tastes like cardboard, and try to sleep. Take it a minute at a time if you need to. I’ll say some prayers for all of you, I know just what you are going through right now. It isn’t easy, but you can ride this out. Very sorry, **Otto**. Losing a father is painful. Many things change as a result. Not all of those changes will be for the worse, however. At least that was my experience. ---
