Uncle Artis (or is it Ardis?) disappears for a … Short version is that he was a notary public, and helped an attorney friend get the wealth of the attorney’s client that disappeared about the same time. That wasn’t what put him in jail. After a couple of years he and his friend decided went for extortion, which included ticks sent to their victims via US mail.
