I agree. And it’s weird how some people think that kids have no taste at all. I remember going to a few movies as a kid and thinking they were terrible and wishing I wasn’t there. Super Mario Brothers was one. I don’t remember why I saw it, if it was something I wanted to see or was dragged along with other people, but I remember how horrifically terrible it was. I would have been grateful if someone had pointed out the critics didn’t like it and maybe another movie would be more fun.

Also, it’s not like the only the Oscar bait movies that are liked by critics. Fast and Furious 6 got a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and I don’t think anyone is going to confuse that with Citizen Kane. Good critics try to rate a movie for what it is and what it’s trying to be, not just on it’s artiness.

After selfishly shepherding my daughter and her friends through an four hour outdoor party complete with the kind of screaming only tween girls are capable of, and selfishly playing with her Monster High & new Harry Styles dolls, I then selfishly acquiesced to play her new Lego Lord of The Rings game with her for nearly every free moment of the weekend. All part of my selfish plot to avoid seeing the movie. Anyway, it’s been selfishly postponed to later this week.

Sounds like a fun birthday weekend for her. If you do end up going to see RIPD, come back and update us on what y’all thought.

> Psycho : (wiki)\*Psycho initially received mixed reviews, but outstanding box office returns prompted reconsideration which led to overwhelming critical acclaim and four Academy Award nominations, including Best Supporting Actress for Leigh and Best Director for Hitchcock.
>
> It is now considered one of Hitchcock’s best films[3] and praised as a work of cinematic art by international film critics and film scholars. Ranked among the greatest films of all time, it set a new level of acceptability for violence, deviant behavior and sexuality in American films.[4] After Hitchcock’s death in 1980, Universal Studios began producing follow-ups: three sequels, a remake, a television movie spin-off and a TV series.

I would happily “pay”, except that while this is a good example of critical consensus changing…it has nothing to do with the practice of pre-screening for critics, which is what I was betting.

“I would bet a million cyber-dollars that there has never been a good\* movie that wasn’t pre-screened for critics.”

_Psycho_ wasn’t pre-screened for critics.

By any definition, Psycho is not only “good” but a great film.

There are others who are considered by many to be good , but Psycho is the one great film on the list, the one film no one can argue isn’t “good”.

When all else fails, I’ll move the goalposts: 🙂

My bet really meant: since the practice of pre-screening new releases for critics was established (whenever that was), there has never been a film withheld from critics by the studio that turned out to be any good (much less great).

And I agree with your assessment of Psycho, fwiw.

I was replying to Chronos. You were collateral damage. Sorry it didn’t meet your expectations for replies.

I’ve seen RIPD and it’s not the flop it’s reported to be. I don’t think it’s a remake of MIB other than it’s a buddy movie. The plot is more Ghostbusters. As far as acting/plot it’s a typical summer movie. A ten year old who hasn’t been exposed to three hundred similar movies/tv shows would be amused.

BTW I’ve done my duty. I’ve taken successive generations of godchildren to many, many children’s movies over the years, including in 1977 to “Raggedy Ann and AndY: A Musical Adventure”. I don’t think anyone can top that sacrifice.
