# My Dog is Going Blind, Advice Welcome

This is my second go-round with a blind dog. The first one woke up from a teeth cleaning stone blind. (We think she had a stroke.) It was difficult in the beginning. She cried and banged into things and we almost got her a blind dog harness (they have a bunch on Amazon). It has a wand attached to the front that keeps them from hitting walls and doors and such. She acclimated pretty quickly, though, so we didn’t need to. We just guided her around until she followed our voices and she seemed pretty content after a few weeks.
Our current dog is 20 and I think he only sees shapes, if that. It’s weird to be right next to him and have him ‘looking’ for me. That he’s deaf as a post doesn’t make it easier, either. I can’t expect him to resond to me calling him and I can’t get his attention any other way than touch. But like our previous dog, he’s gotten pretty used to it. He knows where his bowl is, where his water is and how to get on the bed. And of course we don’t move anything in the house. At all.
Which is the longwinded way to say that as long as you pay attention and look out for them, they seem to adjust. Best of luck.

That is really helpful. I’ve been looking at the halo harnesses you mentioned. Not ready to go there yet. Right now I’m focusing on learning how to guide him around with my voice and with touch. At the same time I’m trying to train myself more than him. I know this can have a really bad outcome and I’d better prepare for it. Trying to be hopeful without being too optimistic.

I wish I had seen this before today. I just gave away a special harness, to our local shelter. I’d bought it for my dog but I lost him yesterday. Here is hoping you have good luck with your dog.
