I am really, really surprised to see how many of my friends changed their profile picture to the Human Rights Campaign’s red and pink equals sign thingy. I mean, most of my friends are Generation Y and later, but still.

I agree 100% with the message behind the symbol, but I personally find it extremely aesthetically unappealing, and my FB page is FULL of it right now. Please just mark me down as supporting marriage equality, and let me know when this FB trend is over. My eyes will thank you.

I don’t really like the design either; I’d rather they stuck with the blue background and made the equals sign pink or red or whatever.

The only pink squares on my page are George Takei.
I’m trying to change my profile pic but fb doesn’t seem to want to cooperate, or I’m probably doing something wrong.

I didn’t change to the pink square because it’s fugly, instead I changed it to a pic of two guys holding a sign with various depictions of ‘Biblical Marriage’.

Changing my facebook profile is too bold a move for me. I’m not one who is willing to put the effort into taking a stand in such a meaningful and passionate way. I have yet to participate in any of these policy-changing jpeg-bending movements, not to mention the fact that I have never even once thought of changing my middle name to “equality”.
Some of us are made to work for social change in quiet, small, simple ways. I’ll leave the heavy moving to the heavy lifters.

It usually doesn’t change the image in thumbnails until you close the tab/window and reopen FB. As long as you see “so and so changed her profile picture” on your timeline it worked.

This isn’t slacktivism. Slacktivism is a meaningless gesture on behalf of something everyone already agrees on. Changing your profile picture to identify as an ally or member of a group seeking the full expression of their rights is a small demonstration of strength. If RNATB were a homophobe, it’s possible that seeing how many of his friends _do_ support GLBT rights would cause him to think harder about his own opinions. Posting a pic of a pokemon to say you’re against child abuse is nowhere near the same thing.

Since when does the definition of slackticism include the latter half of your statement? Everybody doesn’t have to agree on something for a gesture to be slacktivist. It’s only required that the gesture in question is nothing more than lip-service. Slacktivists will do anything to further a cause they’re passionate about, as long as it doesn’t require them to get off their asses. They’re the ultimate armchair champions.

I don’t assume that. I do think that that changing one’s profile picture on a social media site is quite literally the least that a person can do for a cause. And, if that is how you choose to make your good deeds public, by affixing a free decal to yourself with no cost and no sacrifice, don’t be put off if I take it about as seriously as that lolcats picture or oh-so-clever screen capture of Gene Wilder with a snarky comment you posted immediately afterwards, in other words, not at all.
