> Hey, if he’s on board with the whole equal rights thing, I don’t really care that much if he thinks I’m queeny.

That was pretty much my initial reaction. It doesn’t really matter what his views are provided they don’t make him act in a prejudiced way.

The promiscuity thing is true to a certain extent in my personal experience. My gay friends who are or have been ‘playing the field’ tend to get a lot more action than their straight or female equivelants 🙂 However, this certainly doesn’t stop them forming happy long term relationships. Some friends of my mother’s have been together perfectly happily for 15+ years.

As to the effeminacy thing - nah, I don’t think it’s true. What I think is happening is that your dad simply doesn’t notice those gay men who don’t act in the way he expects gay men to. And one more caution - never make assumptions. The campest guy I know is 100% straight.

I don’t think bears are known much outside gay circles – I’ve never heard of them outside this board. I’m not sure it can be considered a stereotype if nobody knows about it!

Why on earth would gay men be attracted to/turned on by femininity? Isnt that a contradiction?

I have my doubts whether or not some folks’ weird assumptions can be argued away with even the most logical statements. Like the Doobie Brothers said, “What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away.” Maybe if a “straight acting” gay man came out to your dad or a guy who was “well-groomed” turned out to be married, things might change.

Not really. Sexuality and attraction are enormously complex. For every variation of personality there’s someone who finds that variation attractive.
