# My Favorite Dog got Snake-Bit :sad face:

Dixie got bit by (what I assume was) a snake. Don’t know what kind, didn’t see it, but I assume it was something with venom. Got lots of rattling ones around here.
Poor girl came running to me with her tail down and three visible spots of blood between her nose and eye. ☹ By the time I got the other members of The Killer Elite loaded up and drove home, her face was swollen like a tennis ball. I figured she was a goner.
Drove her an hour to the Critter Emergency room. I’ll skip this part of the story…
She’s still alive, and should pull through, but the poor girl is miserable! Swollen like a Grapefruit at this point. But she did eat and drink, so that’s a good thing. Wagged her tail for me when I went to check on her.
I just feel so bad for her. She’s such a good girl. And I’m very worried. There could be complications down the road. She’s my favorite dog. :o
So, for those keeping score: Bit on the ass by a Coyote
Bit on the face, at least twice, by a snake

Before I had a dog of my own I would have been calmer about something like this, now it’s “OMG, the poor doggie! Poor baby! Who’s a good girl?”
I hope the prognosis is accurate, and she gets well with no problems.

Only one venomous snake for you to worry about, Great Basin rattlesnake. Our dachshund hasn’t tangled with one, but got pulled away once we realized that the rock he was interested in (at Topaz) was rattling.

I have seen many snake bites on dogs. They rarely die from it, unless it’s on the face or nose, which it the first thing a snake sees of a dog. We had a beagle get bit inside her mouth by a snake she clamped down on. Even the vet said he couldn’t believe she lived through that. You got her to the vet so I have high hopes she’ll be okay. Poor Dixie. Hope all goes well. Let us know.☹

Well, that’s what it would have been. We’re crawlin’ with the bastards around here. I wish I was closer to the incident yesterday, so I could verify. It _could_ have been a non-venomous, and the swelling is just a bad reaction. Or, it could have been a rattler, and just not pumped in too much juice. She’s only 11 pounds, so I’m glad she’s still alive.
Poor girl came out of her box a short while ago, and I think she really wanted to go potty, but it was raining real hard, and she did a 180.

My neighbors doxie mix got bit on a foot by a Copperhead a few years ago. They didn’t even go to.the vet. Dog recovered fine, though I’d have gone to the vet with dog.

Yeah, the vet was a bust. Three hours and a little cash for nuthin’. But I was pretty concerned. She looked like she was fading, fast. But I should have know better.

Poor Dixie! I hope she has a smooth and speedy recovery. My little guy is 11 pounds, also, so I could imagine how scary and distressing the event was for you both. But especially Dixie!

Oh, we’re all glad she’s still alive. Me, I particularly like Dachshunds; my great-aunt Dorothy and Uncle Fran had one named Heidi that I loved; going to visit them rocked!

Good luck to Dixie!
I had one bit by a rattler a few years ago. Face and neck where horribly swollen. I called my vet (because these things always happen on the weekends) and she said to give her benedryl and antibiotics (I had injectable penicillin in the fridge for the horses) and to bring her in the next day. She ended up being fine.

Poor baby. She should be ok, if she’s made it this far. Long term side effects are uncommon. Doxies don’t have a lot of meat on their faces. I would bet that the snake didn’t get much traction, which would limit how much venom it could inject. Even kids who take a full meaty hit usually recover just fine.

Sorry about the K9, **Gato**. Hope she recovers fully. Our Border Collie (mix), with her one candy-corn of a brain cell, is determined to stick her face into the biggest nest she can find. Fortunately, most of our snakes in the area are non-venomous. But she’s cruising for a snout-bite, because that’s what happens when you shove your face right in there and yell, _Hi! Snake! How ya doin’?_

I saw it coming, but she made a potty on the floor in the back room. Raining too hard for\* Old Snakebite\* to go outside.

Hey Gato, my old Granny used to swear bacon grease would cure snake bite in dogs. She would massage into the bite. I think maybe it was the salt and whatever else is in bacon grease. Or maybe the other dogs would lick it and help cure it. Cook bacon, it could cheer up the dogs as a bonus.
