I’m also overjoyed that [voters rejected South Dakota’s law banning almost all abortions](http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2006/11/07/politics/p210436S53.DTL&type=politics) and [Arizona became the first state to defeat a constitutional amendment against same-sex marriage](http://www.azstarnet.com/sn/hourlyupdate/155011.php). Richard Pombo wasn’t my congressman, so it might not affect me too much, but [I’m still glad he lost](http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/11/08/MNG9LM8JDV4.DTL). Not only did he lose, he lost to the same person he beat by more than 20 percentage points in the 2004 election 😃 ---

For the past 3 elections, I’ve sat down the morning after with a large plate of crow. I had nightmares of an Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears replay with the Dems grabbing defeat out of the jaws of victory. Maybe we can hear the end of Diebold conspiracy theories. ---

Pure NFA independent. He’s not even affiliated with the [Vermont Progressive Party](http://www.progressiveparty.org/); I’ve always wondered why not, as he seems to share their politics. ---

Can a republican disgusted with the current party and admin join your celebration. I am quite happy with the results. I also voted a straight Dem ticket for the first time in my life. (In the township election, my preferred candidate was a democrat, that was dumb luck, I would not let national elections affect my local choices). So congrats and do no harm. These victories mean nothing unless something is done. I’ve thought about it and I’m not sure if I want heads to roll, although I tend to believe it’d happen that way if the roles were reversed. Checks? Check… Balances? Check… So now let’s get problems solved, things out of the way, ideas floating, and utilities nationalized! What? ---

Well, I’m not a fan of the Democrats, they’re too wishy-washy and they’ve gravitated pretty far into Republican territory anyway. But at least they’re a better choice than that ultra-conservative, anti-democracy Jesus freaks that have been calling the shots since 2001. It remains to be seen whether the New Boss will be any different from the Old Boss, but I can’t imagine them doing any worse. It is encouraging to see that this anti-Republican revolution was strong enough to actually make a different at the ballot box, overcoming all the voter fraud and ballot manipulation that the Republicans worked to their advantage in the last three elections, and certainly tried this time (but failed, obviously.) All it took was overwhelming numbers. Oh, and some closeted gay Senator guy chatting up teenage boys on the Internet - which, as we all know, is a far greater threat to our society than the fake Iraq war, gas prices, corporate welfare, and the bullshit that followed Katrina. :rolleyes: But hey, if that’s what it takes, I don’t care. Mark Foley deserves a medal, in my opinion! !!! THANK YOU, MARK FOLEY !!! ---

My fond hope is that the Republicans take this lesson very much to heart. Cut spending. Balance the budget. Like it or not, things have to change in Iraq. It may be for the better, it may be (God help them) for the worse, but by golly things have to change. Rumsfeld’s out. OK, that’s a start, although not much more than that. Hastert is also out. That’s another. Foley’s already gone, so another albatross is off their necks. Now work out some reasonable compromises with Pelosi _et al._, and let’s move forward on Medicare and Social Security. It’s not a pressing problem. We need to implement the recommendations of the 9-11 commission, fix the screwed-up prescription drug plan, and raise the minimum wage. Then we can plan an orderly withdrawal from Iraq, legalize stem cell research, and roll taxes back to where they were in the 1990’s. I look forward to many vetos and delaying tactics by the President and remaining Republicans. With the mood of the country being what it is, that sort of obstructionism will set the stage perfectly for bigger Democratic gains in '08 … . 🙂 ---
