I believe that **Trinopus** was attempting to point out the irony or Catch-22-ness of having a lane in which it is impossible to drive legally. If you go over 65, you’re speeding, which is illegal; but if you go under 65, you’re driving too slow for the fast lane, which is also illegal. If I were taking his remark about taxes seriously, I would attempt to show him that it is possible to benefit from the fast lane’s existence without actually driving in it. ---

Tricky. Because no one can legally drive there, the way things stand now. The number one lane is a catch-22 of its own. Right now, a highway patrolman could pull over anyone using it, and ticket them. I may benefit indirectly, but I’m still barred from (legally) using it, and that’s why I resent having to pay taxes for it. I want a rebate! ---

As far as I know, you can legally drive in the passing lanes as long as you are overtaking the traffic to your right. The law here is “keep right except to pass,” and in many states it is "slower traffic keep right, except to pass. The speed limit remains the same regardless of which lane you are in. ---

I may have an anomaly flavored opinion here but I’m all for pitting constantly weaving drivers and those who clog up the left lane no matter the speed. I really don’t care if you get the fuck out of MY way or out of THE way. If traffic behind you is moving faster than you then move over. I’ve been the guy passing and I’ve been the guy moving over. I found that the moving over when a faster car is behind you is much easier than passing a car in front of you which doesn’t move over either out of ignorance or a willful attempt to get his money’s worth out of his tax dollar. ---

Actually, good point, that sometimes happens. The number one lane is moving at 45 mph, but the number two lane is moving at only 40 mph, so I’m perfectly legal in the fast lane. Now, there may be assholes who want me to go 50, but so long as I’m going faster than the traffic in the next lane over, I’m legal. (I’ll accept that it’s somewhat jerkish, but it’s legal.) So I’ll have to reduce the sum I’m asking for in my lawsuit… 😉 ---

Then you have to move your pokey ass over so the guy going 50 can pass you.
