My First Thread Ever - and I need advice!!

My lame advice…

You’re a temp with an offer for a permanent position. It’s an increase in pay, an increase in responsibility. Either of which are legitimate reasons to change jobs - both together doubles the worth. Any boss worth their salt won’t hate you for following a better opportunity for you. If the boss you have will take it that badly, is that a boss you want to remain working for? Also, this current job will end. Then you will need a new job anyway.

It’s good to enjoy the people you work with - it would be a dreary job if you hated them. But you will meet new people in the new job too.

Your current job seems to be mindless and pretty well lacking in things to do. Okay for a while, but anyone with any ambition and self-worth will get tired of it. And the worst part of that is you get too used to being a slacker at work and it’s that much harder to get back to doing work at work. Trust me, I know this.

Reasons NOT to take the job:

  1. You can’t work for the new boss. You said he/she is difficult. What does that mean? Picky? Expecting perfection? Requiring you there 80 hrs a week? If the person is difficult but something you can tolerate then okay, but if you can’t tolerate or enjoy working for the new boss, don’t take it. Stay where you are or look for a new one elsewhere.
  2. The people aspect is that important to you. I don’t know what a claim’s officer is or does. It would seem you would have some interrelation with other people. However, if it isn’t something that matches your personality and needs, then you won’t enjoy it. You could take it as a temporary step, but of course there’s the tradeoffs from leaving your current position, and also the temp agency you work for.

To me it sounds like you want to take the new job but are just worried about the ramifications of people not liking you for leaving them stranded without a receptionist. I would think you could negotiate something between the two offices - just how quickly do they need you in the new job? How quickly could they come up with a new receptionist?

Good luck in your decision.

Or you could move to Houston.

Well, I’ll be looking for a new assistant sooner than I thought. Um, promotion, not firing or quitting. How’s your Autocad?

Scratch that–just what I need, a gorgeous elf three feet away.

Go with the permanence, money, and resposibility. As a person who hires I look for that sort of ambition and good sense. It’ll be good practice learning to work with that boss.

I think you guys have summed it up well for me.

I have taken the reception position purely as a stepping stone whilst I got my health back on track. I actually come from a background of being a pre-school teacher and director of a child care centre and then a PA after that, so I definately do feel a little redundant in my current position. It is mostly the lack of challenge in my current position that is annoying. In the 6 weeks I have been temping for them I have restructured everything so that it runs efficiently and now I fear I will be bored.

I have another meeting on monday with the boss who wants me to work for him and then I think I will wrangle one with management of my current boss. shrugs

Cross your fingers for me and wish me luck.

G’luck, wyld. And more BIG HUGS for you, sweetie.

Thanks Nym (((((((((((Nym)))))))))))

If your new position gives you a health plan and a 401k in addition to extra pay and challenges, by all means take the job. You should develop very little loyalty to the temp agencies you work for, if they don’t remember your name nor give you at minimum a health plan, other than the onee in which it tells you to plan to never get sick. I had some bad experience with a couple of temp agencies myself.

OK guys here is where I currently stand.

  1. an interesting weekend (and some rather nice developments on a couple of fronts grins) which didn’t give me much time to think about the job - probably a good thing.

  2. Had my house broken into last night whilst I was in bed - yucky.

  3. Talked to my prospective boss this morning and have agreed to an interview later today. Have also discussed this with my current bos and she is being rather nice about it - and appreciates my honesty.

  4. Cleared it with my temp agency that I am considering this - and they are being really supportive (I get on really well with my consultant).

  5. Have decided to fully suss out the new job and will take it if the wage is good and I am happy with the description.

  6. Am going home to fill out police reports etc and put in an insurance claim. Damn Damn Damn.

sigh I need a hug :frowning:

I’m so sorry to hear about your house being broken into, sweetie. My Jeep was stolen a few weeks ago. It’s a scary, dirty feeling. Sounds like you had a good weekend, though. <wink, wink, nudge, nudge, eh?> And congrats on the job situation seeming to sort itself out. Honesty is always the way to go. Hope it all turns out for you, lovey.

Thanks Nym

I just have so much on my mind at the moment that any little hassle is just compounding the problems. In serious need of a big hug, long bath and massage.

Sigh. I have the interview at 1pm and then I am off home to sort out the mess with the break in. shrugs

:frowning: I am just sad today.

But yes the weekend was pretty damn good nudge nudge And I got to play on a jumping castle and get my face painted, and a baloon hat made for me and to play with farm animals -… it was an awesome christmas party on sunday grins and then sunday night was even better - till I got broken into of course.

Osip is there for you darling, Hug and backrub is within the realm of Osip’s abilities. Also, rekeying and installing lock and such Pays Osip’s bills you Can help out there. The only problem is a huge amount of water in the way. :frowning:

Oh - Osip - thank you so much for your support - it has just been a really stressful few weeks and bah humbug this is one complication I didn’t need.

On the up side - I have had my interview for the job so that is over now - and I get to leave work early - even if it is only to go and sort out stuff with the cops and get my cards renewed etc etc.

And I have sunburn (Just to complete my whinge) :frowning: Oh well - it could be worse. Lucky I left my car at dpr’s place as my keys were right next to my wallet etc and they could have flogged that as well

grins Can’t stay sad for long - too many good things in life - like hugs and massages

((Osip))

Sorry about the break-in. Happy you are considering the job. Disappointed that you won’t be my new assistant.
