I’ve heard the song sung with a short intro addressing it to a “fine-feathered friend”. I know it’s from the musical _Babes in Arms_ but I’ve never seen it. Who is the song supposedly being sung to?

Valentine 🙂

That’s the character’s actual name.

Damn. I jumped in, eager to be first with the “Behold the way our fine feathered friend…” part.

I will now have the song in my head all day. Lovely, isn’t it?

Ella Fitzgerald’s version of this from the Rogers and Hart songbook is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Your link does put the song in its context in the play. But why does Susie call Val “fine feathered”? Is this some idiom that used to be popular?
