Bwahahaha, nailed it in one but got the population a little high. No offense, but I spent 3 years in the SW China countryside in the 1980s. I’ve heard this kinda of rethoric (sp?) before but not for at least a decade. Then again, I spent the last 12 years or so in Shanghai. I know you’re probably happy to have mad monkey communisty love but it takes a lot of patience and education to change someone’s conservative upbringing (no matter what country they are from). Standard Chinese interaction: Westerner: Man, the driving her is crazy Chinese: But you killed off the Indians in America Westerner: WTF? What you say is largely true but that’s a seperate discussion, like when we talk about the Manchus, but has nothing to do with the fact that Chinese traffic is crazy. Chinese: you hate China Trust me, been there, still married to her 18 years and 3 kids later. 😉 ---

Have you seen the IMHO thread about whether it’s possible to succeed in a relationship with a substantial IQ differential? You’re living it. She sounds like a fuckin’ moron. It’s up to you whether her other traits are enough to cancel out her dumbness, but if you decide they are and you want to stay together, then you should probably stop engaging her in political conversations. ---

Anecdote =/= evidence, yada yada I know, but I speak from experience. An ex-GF of mine was a wickedly smart computer programmer, but she wouldn’t tolerate any negativity towards China. I just learned to not talk about China past, say, the 1700s, and we broke up before it became a big issue. How **China Guy** lives with it is beyond me. ---

Okay, the comment that she was a dumbass may or may not apply–I don’t know the girl. But of all the adults I’ve met who are still 100% indoctrinated with the bullshit they were fed in childhood (patriotism, religion, ideas like “abstinence-only sex education is good”), the one thing they’ve had in common is intellectual incuriosity. The advice to avoid political conversations is still spot-on. OP really shouldn’t be needling his girlfriend, because he knows how she’s going to respond and he knows that it irritates/upsets her. Either be the bigger person and stop bringing it up, or find a girlfriend who isn’t gung-ho about the old republic.
