I am sorry to hear about your grandfather. My own grandpa died of ALS in 1988, after two years of steady decline. It sounds like your grandfather was a great person. ---

**Twisty** , I went through (and are still going through, I guess) almost the exact same thing, it seems, as you are. My grandfather died in mid-November at age 87. He too was but a shell of his former self - it wasn’t Alzheimer’s, but senile dementia that got him. The last few years were hard, and the very last was awful. My nana was his primary caregiver for all but the last two months of his life: She’d injured herself & had no choice but to allow my mother to place him in a nursing home. We steeled ourselves for his death, just like you & yours did for the passing of your grandfather, but there’s no way to be completely prepared. That’s okay, though: I think if you can just be there for each other, you’ll make it through. I know you will, in fact. If you need to talk, please, _please_ have no qualms about e-mailing me. My thoughts go out to you & your family. ---

Thinking of you and your family, **John**. Your granddad sounds like he was a wonderful giving man, caring for his family. Don’t remember him like he was the last 8 years - remember the man that went overseas to make sure his kids were fed, the man that succesfully raised 13 children in a time more difficult than ours, in a country that’s now vastly different and less violent then it was in his day. Your mother sounds like a wonderful, giving person as well, making sure her father got a worthy goodbye from this mortal coil. And even though he had Alzheimers, your grandfather must have known and recognised good care and love when he encountered it, even in his later days. Paddy McLoughlin will be the man I’m drinking to when I raise my next pint of the black stuff, I can assure you. May he be in a better place, sound of mind, and looking back upon a life well lived.
