# My husband is addicted to pro wrestling.

I just don’t understand it. He is a wonderful, funny, intelligent, grown man. And yet every Monday and Thursday night, he stares at WWF for two hours. If we won’t be at home, he tapes it. On weekends, it’s worse. It’s other pro wrestling, on other channels, on and off all weekend long. And then there’s the pay per view stuff.
I will occasionally comment on how silly the characters, so-called plot, fake wrestling moves are. He agrees with me. He knows it’s fake. He agrees with me that it is the equivalent of a male soap opera. Yet he keeps watching.
Why?

Dye your hair red, wear a thong that you can see out the top of hipster pants and tackle him on a wednesday night. He’ll love you for it.
Really, wrestling is entertaining. I can see why many people don’t like it, but it really isn’t that different from a violoent man oriented days of our lives. I used to think the way you do about my guy. But, I decided to just sit down and watch it with him one night. I actually got into it and we watch RAW every monday. It is a great way for us to “bond”

Because it’s funny as hell. I love it, my kids enjoy it off and on, Demo absolutely can’t stand it. But, as much as he despises it, even he will admit he has laughed occasionally at the sheer ridiculousness of it.

It _is_ a soap opera, as you said, KimKatt. A soap with lots of (mostly) faked physical violence. The occasional scantily-clad, big-haired, melon-breasted babe keeps them hooked, too.
I used to be hooked on wrestling, too. I even attended a WrestleMania (WrestleMania 3, to be exact–Goddess, I’m old). But now I’m a grown-up. My time is spent now wondering who’d win an Elmo vs. Blue cage match. 😃

Okay, pretty much what I figured. It’s a soap opera-type addiction. 🙂
Hey, I don’t give him much grief about it, and I don’t even request that he change the channel. I even have to admit that I know who everyone is and what the so-called plot is. But I still wouldn’t turn it on if he weren’t watching it.
Nika, I have tackled him on the occasional Wednesday night while wearing a thong. He does seem to rather like that 😃

I _will not_ admit to laughing at any of it! 😉
It’s the most idiotic thing I have ever seen. I feel “dumbed” after watching just a few minutes of it, not to mention it’s about the most violent thing I’ve ever seen. I don’t care if it’s fake or not, watching women get hit over the head with folding chairs just doesn’t seem like quality entertainment to me. Don’t expect many rational explanations to your query here. There seem to be an overwhelming majority of Dopers who can’t get enough of the crap which mystifies me to no end. I have a feeling they are under the control of the subliminal messages played throughout the show. Nothing else would explain someone wanting to watch the same garbage over and over. And I’m only half joking when I say that.
Needless to say, Kim, I feel your pain. psy watches the crap on the same days. What’s worse, she’s now watching college football on Saturdays as well. Count your blessings. 😉

Oh hush Demo ! I love wrestling ! LOVE it. I grew up watching it. I know it isn’t _real_ but you have to admit that very few people could take the punishment those men and women do on a daily basis.

It might have already been said, but the reason I watch wrestling is for the same reason I watch bad movies. It’s fun. 🙂
I don’t really like, _Hard Hunted_, but my friends have a blast when we watch it. We make fun of people, if someone has a cool character, he’s the good guy. The same reason people go to see cheesey horror movies (were you looking for serious drama when you rented _Slumber Party Massacre_ with your buddies?). Now, change that into a bad action movie. Even better. I know that they’re not really fighting, and it’s still a bad movie, but now you’ve got action too.
It’s fun, and exciting to watch people do moves that if they messed up they would be hurt. But, since it’s choreographed to a certain degree (they practice moves), there isn’t usually much danger of that (sadly, it has happened). But it’s like a movie; it’s a suspension of disbelief. As for the plot, it’s just a little better than a bad action movie, and fun for the same reasons. Good guys vs. bad guys. It’s called “sports entertainment.” It’s not a sport in the sense that everything is real competition, but it’s athletic people doing sometimes amazing moves and acting out a part. Just a lot of fun.

i find it odd that all this would come from someone who quotes “Fight Club,” one of the most violent, mysoganistic movies of all time, in their sig.
What’s so entertaining aboot wrestling is that it, at the very core, is a soap opera. But it does soap operas one–nay, THREE better. It has the dare-devil maneuvers (which are scripted, but you can’t look at them and say they don’t hurt at all)of such current greats as the Hardy Boyz and Chris Jericho. It has the same beautiful, big breasted women that regular soaps have (so you can’t complain aboot this one, ladies), only they like to beat eachother up instead of just giving eachother snide little looks. And it’s not like the women are completely helpless in the male-dominated world of the WWF. Chyna and Lita (the latter being the one who’s famous for the above-mentioned thong over hipster pants look) have been know to beat the hell out of men with everything from chair shots to hurricaranas-- a very complicated off-the-top-rope move. Plus, for all the ladies, you have eye candy like The Rock and Kurt Angle to gawk at. Wrestling has a little of something for everybody if you just give it half a chance.

As it has been said before in this thread, people watch wrestling because it is fun. It has all the same type characters as a soap opera, you got your bad guys, you got your good guys, you got pretty women, you got good looking men, you got unbelievible plots, you have drama, you have comedy. Sounds like any show on tv nowadays. Every Monday and Thursday I laugh my ass off for a couple of hours. My s.o. doesn’t care for it, so she spends those nights posting on SDMB. Its all good. Oh yeah, Diesel, didn’t you used to be Kevin Nash.

Well, you shouldn’t find it odd. Sure, _Fight Club_ is violent, but it is also a deep, cutting-edge psychological drama that was created with much thought and intelligence, unlike wrestling. Also, I don’t watch it twice a week, nor does it depict (and you may call me old fashioned here) women being beat up by men. Your parallel, Diesel, is weak at best.

I’m with you **Demo** , I’d rather pluck nose hairs than watch “wrestling”. I just do not see **anything** redeeming about it. Between the gratituitous violence, phony scripting, blatant sexism, pathetic “acting”, abusive language, transparent fakery, flagrant stereotyping, ridiculous costumes, overblown antics, submoron I.Q.'s, exploitative marketing, overmuscled nitwits and backwater hick audience, I just don’t know which corner to hurl in.
Other than that, I guess there’s nothing wrong with it.

Whoa, i thought nobody would notice that. Actually, my name has nothing to do with Nash. It’s just a nickname my friends gave me.
And Demo, even though Fight Club doesn’t depict women being beaten up, the only woman it depicts at all is a chain-smoking, clothes-stealing leach. And while the Narrator and Tyler are off developing their characters, Marla just seems to be there as the obligatory female so the movie doesn’t seem too mysoganistic. They give her some funny lines and some odd skank-wear, but in the end she’s nothing but another damsel in distress. And while Fight Club was EXTREMELY well put together as far as movies go, you can’t possibly say that just as much work doesn’t go into putting on a live performance with pyrotechnics, captivating storylines, and choreographed fights. It’s nowhere near as intelligent as FC, but wrestling isn’t supposed to be and it knows it. It’s a stage show that’s supposed to give you a few laughs and someone to cheer for. At the end of the night it’s just a nice slice of entertainment.
