Mickeys house had a conveyor thing. He typed on a console what he wanted and it came down the conveyor. Before it was over Mickey was on it, trying to manually stop it. All because he wanted change his order. ---

For much of the year, our neighbors are away in foreign parts, and our only neighbor is the robot that cuts the lawn (controlled by smartphone). I expect this will be true of quite a few people in the decades to come; living next door to a robot. ---

That reminds me of the Ray Bradbury short story, _[There Will Come Soft Rains](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/There_Will_Come_Soft_Rains_(short_story))_. From Wikipedia > A nuclear catastrophe leaves the city of Allendale, California, entirely desolate. However, within one miraculously preserved house, the daily routine continues – automatic systems within the home prepare breakfast, clean the house, make beds, wash dishes, and address the former residents without any knowledge of their current state as burnt silhouettes on one of the walls, similar to Human Shadow Etched in Stone. ---

I just turned in a column for a special issue of a computer design journal about putting machine learning into IoT devices like these. That includes voice. So, it is coming. (No, not that meaning.) A story from Galaxy from 1972 had a vacuum cleaner that did walls as well as floors, and learned how to open the front door to go to the house next door where it tried to hump the smart sewing machine there. So maybe we should limit what these machines can do. ---
