The leash law does not apply in this case, I found out. However, it turns out it is illegal for a pet to harass another animal, domestic or wild. My landlord will be issued a ticket to appear in court for an arraignment in May. The animal control officer attached a copy of my bill to the complaint, detailing Achmed’s many injuries. Once the bastard is convicted, the judge may award me damages on the spot. Apparently it IS illegal for your dog to kill cats indiscriminately, whether it’s in your own yard or not. Otherwise, I have an attorney and will sue.
My cat is in critical but stable condition. I visited him today and he was stoned out of his gourd on morphine, but he attended to my voice. His incision is HUGE but he is hanging in there. Optimistic estimates place him back at home with me by the weekend. Pessimistic estimates say that he still could crash out and leave me.
I am looking for another place to live ASAP. My living situation will no doubt become rather untenable in the near future.
I appreciate the expressions of sympathy from everyone. Positive thoughts are welcome.
When I read what you said about your poor cat screaming I started to cry. Hardly anything hurts worse than to know someone or something you love is in pain. My apartment was once broken into, and I couldn’t find my cat afterward. I crept around, scared to death I was going to find him dead or dying. I got pretty hysterical, but he finally came out from where he’d been hiding, too scared to show himself, even to me.
I’ll give your kitty a hug by proxy.(Goes off to find Tobermory and the Road Warrior) Take care of yourself, we are all rooting for you both. If you feel like it, keep us informed as to the health of your cat, and to your search for a new place to live. Too bad you aren’t in Topeka, I’d rent to you.
It occurs to me that in all my ruminations about legal matters I forgot to wish little Achmed a full recovery. Her’s hoping everything works out for you and the little guy, Ruby.
That’s (cautiously) great new, Ruby; well, as great as you can hope for in the circumstances, I guess.
Here’s hoping you find a good new place FAST. Your landlord doesn’t sound like a prince among men, and he probably will make your life miserable (as you’ve already noted).
Bad news–Achmed crashed this morning. He wasn’t able to breathe right so they
have to do more surgery to correct his deviated sternum. If that’s the problem,
then he should recover assuming he can survive the surgery and all the
inflammation and trauma inherent in that. If this surgery does NOT correct his
problem, then I guess it’s all over. Total price to date: $4000, as if I remotely gave a FUCK about that.
My landlord is being served with a summons this morning, so life should get even
worse very soon. Anyone who prays, please pray.
Ah man, my heart dropped when I saw this thread bumped up and that you had posted. I was afraid that something like that had happened. As one cat lover to another, who has lost little ones before, please accept my strong wish for a full and quick recovery for your friend. Don’t give up! And if you need a shoulder to lean on, cyber though it may be, there are lots of us lining up.
Achmed may die. The breathing problem wasn’t due to his sternum but fluid in his lungs. It’s touch and go. This is very bad news. I am going there now to wait in the lobby against any future events.
Praying hard for Achmed. I shouldn’t read this thread at work because it makes me cry, but I have to keep up with how the little guy’s doing.
Fluid in the lungs isn’t necessarily awful–I’m on a list for cats with heart problems, and they’re always talking about how their cats get fluid drained from their lungs and are back to themselves soon afterward. I know this isn’t the same thing, but I’m really hoping that it’s similar.
Fight on, little kitty. Lots of folks are pulling for you…
oh sweet Achmed!! You poor thing. I’m praying for your sweet little furry face.
I’m so sorry Rubystreak. I had to put my 15 year old furry friend down just two months ago, I hope it doesnt come to that for you. It’s such an awful thing.
I’m praying, and sending healing vibes Achmed’s way. You take care of yourself too Rubystreak, make sure you eat something, drink something, and try to rest. I know it’s hard, when you’re so anxious, and don’t know whether to hope, or weep. Know that we are praying for the best. All I can say is, I hope you can get some rest soon. Take it easy, ok?
Holy shit. I am so sorry, and I hope Achmed pulls through with flying colors. My two cats mean everything to me, and I know exactly how you feel when you talk about Achmed. I just tried to read one of your posts to my fiance, and started crying - you’ve got our immense sympathies.
Sue the fucker. His dog nearly killed your baby. He needs to take responsibility for it.
I’ll be thinking about you and Achmed this evening. Oscar and Emmy send kitty-hugs and well-wishes his way, too.
Several years ago, one of our neighbors, a veterinarian, let his dogs run one evening. Nice big dogs. Attacked our cat. One got her head and the other got her rear and they were playing tug of war with her when my Dad got out there.
She lived, no thanks to him. Asshole.
My Dad called the emergency vet service, and it just happened that our neighbor was the one on call that night (rural area, no staffed emergency clinic). Dad told them what had happened, and they gave us the wrong number to call to page him.
We had her at our vet before they opened the next morning, and they took good care of her, and she was fine several days later. I’ve still got a good ass-whooping waiting for that guy, though.
I hope your baby is fine too. And that your landlord … well, I’ll not go there. There is a special place for people like him, and it’s not a place with loving kitties.
