The St Pete Times (online) has started to run a [daily feature where you can see what people in the greater area have been arrested recently](http://mugshots.tampabay.com/) and on which charges. I’ve gotten into the habit of skimming through the mugshots and trying to guess what people have been arrested before, especially if the photo is a bit extreme. [This guy, T. Fink](http://www.pascosheriff.com/webapps/IMS500R.pgm?TASK=disp&rrn=000121898&rnd=95291), caught my eye this morning. Pretty brutal looking photo and still a bit surprised to be there (not unusual). My guess: driving while intoxicated My logic was that he must have been hammered, crashed his car, and the airbag smashed his face up. Second guess would be resisting arrest. I do feel guilty about this: even though it’s public record, it’s still fairly voyeuristic. ---

My guess was burglary. Second guess: bomb-making gone bad. I wouldn’t feel guilty at all about this. Yes, there is an opportunity for schadenfreude but it’s also kind of a fun game. You might play anyway if they were pictured for some positive reason–they’d won awards or contests in various fields, or they were hobbyists and you could try to guess the hobby. But mug shots are inherently more interesting than other photographs because they are taken “as-is” and criminal types tends to have more distinctive looks. ---

I’ve had occasion to troll through mugshot databases. There are a bunch of faces in there which give off a distinct “I’m a serious anti-social type; don’t look at me crosswise or else …”. There are a bunch which seem kinda shady. And the majority who look disturbingly ordinary. Like with driver’s license photos, they aren’t taken to flatter, so you need to make some allowance for that when evaluating the images. My takeaway from the experience was that although some bad-asses are real obvious, the majority are just like you and me when dressed in our KMart clothes. On average younger, a bit bigger, and much more likely to be male than the SDMB audience, but otherwise unremarkable. ---

As a newspaper guy I get the local sheriff’s report every day, sometimes twice. It shows name, age, residence, and a paragraph on each incident (arrest, check the welfare, whatever) that his team responds to each day. We go through each one…just in case. And occasionally it pays off. How else would I have known that Congressman Zack Space of the next district over was pulled over for speeding and discovered to be driving without a valid driver’s license? Sometimes you win! ---

I don’t think he’s beat up-- no amount of bludgeoning is going to bruise your facial hair. Do people hunt in that area? My guess is he’s an overly-enthusiastic hunter who camo’d his face and then decided to go stalking Bambi on private property. Edit: Whoops. Just noticed you could enlarge the picture. The dude definitely got his eyes dotted. Doesn’t explain the charcoal cheeks, though . . . 😕 ---

Very interesting. A lot of drunk drivers. I was also surprised at the amount of women charged with domestic battery. Also many women passing bad checks. ---
