The vet saw her a month ago and said she’d looked great. This is the 2nd Trak mare I’ve lost in foal. The ony two times in my life I’ve tried to bring a life into the world. I’ve never had a child of my own, or even a litter of puppies or kittens, being a spay/neuter advocate. Twice I’ve bred horses, hoping for a horse to keep forever. Twice I’ve been denied. I’m done trying to breed. StG ---

Aw, **StG** , I’m so very sorry. It’s bad enough to lose an animal who has been ill or is at the end of life, but to be blindsided like that is just plain awful. ☹ ---

How sad. She was such a beautiful mare and it must be incredibly disappointing to lose the foal too when you’ve been looking forward to the foal for so long. Especially when there’s no clear explanation for it. ☹ At least you gave her a good life in her final years. With all the homeless horses out there nowadays, who knows, if you hadn’t gotten her, maybe she would have ended up in the hands of an idiot who would have mistreated her or ended up shipping her off to slaughter. It sounds like she had a very good life with you and that your other horse was a good buddy for her to have. If being able to raise a horse from the beginning is something that you’ve always wanted, maybe when the time is right you might be able to look into adopting a foal or a young colt/filly who needs a home? When I was looking at horse rescues where I might be able to make a donation in Nakota’s honor, I found [this horse rescue group](http://www.vea-tnhorserescue.org/) which seems to have a number of homeless young horses. Unfortunately I imagine there are many others out there who could use the care of someone like you. ---

Irish is just inconsolable. Even though he had time with her body, he’s still calling and cantering up and down looking for her. He was okay and quiet and staying with her until the neighbor came and pulled her body up to the road. I don’t have anything to sedate him with. I’m disappointed in my vet. When I called this morning to tell her, I didn’t hear back after I left a message. I called later to ask what to do with Irish but didn’t leave a message. She left a message back saying, “Sorry to hear about Nakota. I’m on vacation. Call me Monday if you need to ask me anything.” She’s certainly allowed to take vacations, but she needs to at least leave a message on her phone if she’s not going to be available. What if this had been an emergency? StG ---

Is he all alone? Do you have a neighbor/horse friend who might have a quiet pony or a minidonk or something to lend you? If not, maybe your farrier knows someone. ETA: I, too, am surprised she didn’t leave an emergency back up number to call on her voicemail. ---
