My mom took too much aspirin and got a nosebleed... How can she stop it?

My nurse friend pointed out another reason for aspirin related nosebleed to get checked out: she just had a patient die from acidosis from an overdose of aspirin. Your body becomes more acidic as it digests aspirin. Too acid can kill you. If you go into the doc, they can easily check your pH and adjust it as needed with bicarb intravenously or respiratory therapy (as well as adjust your aspirin regimen), but if it goes too far, there’s nothing they can do fast enough.

It’s not always a matter of chugging three bottles of aspirin (that’s how her patient did it), it can build up slowly over time.

I am SO proud of myself, because this is exactly what I found works for most problem nosebleeds. You’re right, it SEEMS wrong but always always always works.

QTM to the Medical Rescue again!

Hey Dopers! Sorry I didn’t check back after my last post.

Thanks for the concern even after I said the issue was “resolved.” I asked her to stop taking the Aspirins (capitalize for brand names, right?) and rest for a couple of days after the nosebleed, and she’s promised to never take more than the prescribed dose, as she agreed that a bleeding nose was no fun.

As for the general Aspirin advice, I’ll do some more online research on what you guys mentioned and I’ll go ask the doctor about it during our next visit.

I adore you all and I hope to one day be of some help to all of you!
