I, too, lost my mom first and my dad followed 16 months later. Men of that generation were not made to live alone. What happened, though, is that my dad and I got an opportunity to know each other better over that next year. Mom and I had been very close but Dad was always the stoic breadwinner and would always pass the phone to Mom. 🙂 Take gentle care of yourself, **kaylasdad**. Take solace in the fact that Mom is no longer in pain. May you all survive the holidays remembering the good times. And preparing the Christmas meal for that large of a crew is an honor, indeed. Wow. ---

My deepest condolences to you and your family. Though this was a known situation (and it sounds like you all have handled this so beautifully), even though now your mother is free, it’s still grief and pain. I wish you strength and serenity in the hours and days to come. ---

My condolances. My father died one year ago today. He had been very ill for a while, and I was going home for Christmas knowing that I would be seeing him for the last time. I didn’t get to see him. My sister called me while I was in line to board the plane. The plane was full of happy families going to see their loved ones at the holidays, and I was the guy with tears in my eyes. ---
