I will keep your family and that of the young man lost in my thoughts and prayers, **Zoe**. I can’t imagine what pain you’re all going through, especially your niece. This is one of those situations that some people never quite manage to reconcile their emotions over. I hope that there are counselors available to all concerned who can help them through their grief. ---

When I opened the thread I hoped it was about sports tickets. Damn, Zoe, I’m sorry. I never drove drunk, but I can remember feeling invulnerable at that age. ---

How many people would feel sorry for a drunk driver who killed one of their own loved ones or put them in the hospital? I hope he goes to prison. It wasn’t a “tragic accident,” it was a crime that killed somebody. ---

My thanks to all of you who are posting. I am doing okay with this so far, but your concern means the world to me. **Seven** is not threadshitting at all. When someone is found to be driving while intoxicated – whether there has been an accident or not – her or his car should be impounded for a very long time and the driver’s license taken away. There should be some jail time too _then_. Denmark has a very tough intoxicated driver law that is similar to that. I can’t remember all of the details. I went to a large New Year’s Eve party there once and **no one** who had been drinking drove a car away. Cabs were arranged ahead of time, or there were designated drivers who really didn’t drink, or people walked to nearby friends’ homes. **Seven** , I hope that you are able to find relief from your injuries. I am with you. The first year that I taught school, I had to stand at the wall of windows of my classroom to watch the funeral procession of one of our Seniors as it passed. He had been killed by a drunk driver. **Diogenes** agrees with us. And I think that many here feel the same. **SeaDragon** , I know that you know how my family is feeling. I’m sorry for your losses too. **tumbledown** , you are exactly right. It is my niece that I am thinking of most right now. She doesn’t know what to do with all of her conflicting emotions. **All** of the posts here are valuable to me. I am grateful for your friendships and offers of support. ---

Yes, the nephew should not have been driving but did his friend know he’d been drinking? If you get in the car with a drunk driver you are taking a stupid risk and are also at fault for whatever happens to you. So, yes the fault is with the driver but it is also with any person who chooses to get in the car with a driver who has been drinking. I see it as equal blame. I hope your niece can see this and it can help her through this ordeal. ---

What a shitstorm of terror. I’m really sorry to hear it, Zoe. I never drove “drunk” but like the typical young male idiot I drove buzzed a few times when I was a teenager, and I want to punch myself in the face everytime I think about it. It’s such a needless, pointless risk to take. If I’ve had enough to feel the effects of alcohol whatsoever - or 3 drinks, whichever comes first - I’m not driving. That’s been my policy for years now and it’s served me well. You might get home safe 99 times, but the 100th time, when this happens, it ruins a lot more than just one life. Those 100 cab fares, or long walks, or nights on couches would seem less than paltry. ---

**Zoe** , I _am_ sorry to read this and my heart goes out to you and your family. It’s your niece I feel particularly sorry for. To have her fiance be killed only a few days after he proposed must be heart-breaking. To have him be killed by her brother must be even worse.
