I come across misspelled names quite a bit- I think it’s hilarious. It’s like a walking advertisement to people for your whole life that your parents are/were stupid. I especially love Jaime for Jamie. The other day I had to call the mom of a Jaime and I pronounced it the normal (Spanish) way: Hi-may. The mom corrected me, “Actually, it’s Jamie.” “Oh!” I said, “Is it misspelled on her chart here, J-a-i-m-e?” I guess I need to get a life, but it amused me for a few seconds. Especially since I have a Jamie of my own, and I spelled it right. I’ll agree with the pittee that the poster of the original thread pitting Racheal can’t spell very well and has some problems with punctuation and proper grammar. But given **Carol** ’s history of thread-shitting, and given that it’s pretty much all she ever does on this board, I will agree with the OP of this thread- Carol Stream is an asshole. I won’t go so far as to call her a troll, but so far she walks like a duck. ---

‘Racheal’ is a real name like ‘Micheal’ is a real name. In other words, it’s not. Unless the parents are illiterate or, at the very least, dyslexic, of course. Bottom line: you can’t get an ‘al’ sound out of an ‘eal’. Unless her name is pronounced ‘Raych-eel’, the name is not written in any way that makes sense. Seriously, if we start defending nonsensical spellings on the basis of the ‘parents must be right’, we may as well just start naming children ‘Throatwarbler Mangrove’ and be done with it. What’s more likely? That ‘Racheal’ is a perfectly valid and sensible spelling that nonetheless defies any known rules of spelling vs vocalisation… or that the parents were idiots? ---

Whether the parents were idiots who can’t spell is irrelevant to **Carol Stream** ’s assholish behavior. He/she got all huffy about how “Racheal can’t possibly be a real name” and refused to back down from her stance that “nobody spells it that way” in the face of cites from several people that some people spell it that way. And on the issue of strange name spellings, we’ve had any number of threads about them, and while the “parents are idiots or illiterate” reason for some names is not discounted, I don’t remember anyone in any of those threads frothing at the mouth about how some name “couldn’t possibly be a real name”.
