I got run over when I was 17, by a hit and run driver, and it is a long road to recovery (I had a shattered ankle). She has all my sympathy and I will keep her in my thoughts! Margo ---

My nephew got run over by his father. (Well, sperm-donor, if you wish to be more accurate.) It was one of those huge Chevy trucks, with the extra 2 wheels on the back. He was 2 years old. Turned out just fine. My best wishes to your niece! Quick recovery! ---

I’ll send the wishes on, thanks (I will say “my friends send their wishes” She won’t understand if I say “my fellow dopers send their wishes” She will think I am either on drugs (dope) or just won’t understand at all) It was a hit and run, apparently she was running out of the way of the car and fell. The car drove over her leg, and carried on driving. This was on a quiet, almost-cul-de-sac street. I don’t think you have these kind of streets in the USA - it is a type of street where driving at 20Mph would be considered too fast. In the long run it will be a good experience. Bones heal, shocks get repressed, attention doesn’t. She will remember all the attention she gets. I remember when I broke my foot - the attention I got far outweighed the initial shock and resulting pain. ---

Yeah, kids are amazingly resilient. This is going to make my family sound like it’s totally off the rails, but my other nephew (age 5) fell out of a second story window last week. He’s just fine, got a concussion and all, but otherwise no injuries. It’s crazy what kids can go through and not be harmed. ---

My mother ran over a 1st grader when she drove a school bus. Killed her. She was in my class. My mother knows pain. I have vague memories of her not coming out of the house for weeks and crying constantly for months. Lobsang, it could’ve been worse. The glass is half full ---

Oh I am not dismissing it. It brings to mind the vulnerability of life. What if it happens again? What if the next thoughtless speeding hitter and runner does more damage? What if one of the 1000 other possible accidents happen? It reminds me to worry about my nieces. My brother is now contacting the council with regard to getting speed-bumps installed on the street (personally I think labotomies for careless drivers are a better idea). It will be a miricle if that happens (when does something positive ever happen, _ever?_) ---

Best wishes to your neice **Lobsang**. Car accidents are scary things, perhaps moreso for the family than the actual victim in many cases. When my daughter was hit (suffering a fractured pelvis amongst misc. other injuries) she thankfully had some sort of ‘trauma-amnesia’ re the accident and the immediate days afterwards. Me, however…I remember every damn gruesome detail, and the fear that went with it. Anyway, maybe you can sign her cast with well-wishes from All The Dopers…it’ll confuse the doctors and keep your neice entertained while she tries to explain!! ---

Another “Well Wishing Doper” checking in. Kid, the Younger actually hit a truck when he was almost seven. He ran into the street out front, with Kid, the Elder in hot pursuit and smacked into an elderly neighbor in his old pickup. Fortunately the guy was driving very slowly and the Kid basicly bounced off the side of the front fender. All he got was a few bumps and bruises. Oh, and a book of McDonalds coupons from the very relieved neighbor! Sign her cast and give her a {{hug}} from all the zoo family! ---

Oh, the POOR thing!!! I really, really feel for her. I know exactly what she’s going through (except hers is worse because she got ran over, I did mine by my own clumsiness). Tell her that after the setting, and/or surgery, she’ll feel better. It’s been 4 days now, I slept a lot for the first couple, but am feeling better now. I hope she only broke it and doesn’t need plates or bolts!! ---

Send my best wishes to her, I know what she’s going through, and she should feel incredibly lucky that it wasn’t a lot, lot worse. I’ve been out of hospital for two weeks now after having a tonne of steel collide with my head (my ‘friend’ was driving, damn her), and I’ve come to the realisation that I’ve not got to look at the bad points, but feel very lucky that I didn’t die, and that I eventually woke up. As long as she focusses on this, she’ll be a lot happier during her recovery, and wont have any nasty nightmares about the accident or anything. Once again, wish her a speedy recovery, and make sure she milks the attention she’s getting for all it’s worth! Harry ---

I feel for your mother, Skillet38. What an awful thing to have happen. I know one can seek solace in knowing it was an accident, but considering the level of guilt I still feel for things I accidentally did years ago (never killing or seriously harming anyone), it must be horrible for her. ---
