Ha - mine keeps thinking I want “thou” rather than “you”. It’s similar enough that I don’t always catch it and since it means the same thing, my friends and family must think I just prefer being archaic.

I go to my favorite bar often enough that Google Now recognizes the pattern. Wherever I happen to be, Google Now offers the drive time and route options to the bar.

Some might describe that as a co-dependent relationship…

My phone automatically types “iPhone” and “iPad” into Apple’s preferred capitalization, so it’s apparently working from their point of view. 😃

I get “abd” instead of “and” a lot. It auto-corrects one of the most common words to gibberish. Nice.

What do you all mean by “autocorrect”? You mean you individually type each letter, and the word is on your screen, spelled correctly, and then when you press space it changes to another word?

Ok, not auto-correct. Predictive spelling via swiping.

My weirdest one was going for that’ll but I fat-fingered it into thastll. It auto corrected into “shall hat”. I guess my phone decided “WTH is that supposed to be? Screw it, I’m going to play an anagram game”

The reason I ask is that I use Swype on Android, and when it gives me the wrong word, it’s because that was closer to what I actually indicated with my lazy finger. If I spell out “just”, I get “just”; if I spell out “Judy”, I get “Judy”. I get the impression that a hell of a lot of “autocorrect” problems are caused by people just not using their phones properly. There’s no psychic app yet.

I haven’t really used iPhones, so for people using them, I can’t really comment, although I have a hunch that most of those problems are down to user error as well.

And if you actually send whatever you wrote, even if something did actually change one word to another, well… fewer excuses and more proofreading should do the trick.

If you leave your phone unlocked when you are around my group (and especially if we’ve been drinking), there’s a good chance that your auto-correct settings will be altered.

We changed one friend’s settings to where “no” auto-corrected to “maybe.” Took him a while to realize what had happened (and a few funny stories as a result).

My iPad makes SHARKNADO into all caps. Like there. 🙂

It also occasionally turns “the” into “hue he,” which I don’t get (and just turned “which” into “Heinrich”). There’s at least one more I don’t recall that’s common and annoying.

Proofreading for sure. It annoys me to get a nonsensical message and then have the person tell me “Oh, my phone did that.” If the text is not what you intended, then correct it before hitting send.

The way it works on my phone is that I have to _actively reject_ the suggestion. I am aware that settings can be changed, I just haven’t cared enough to investigate that (thus, I am MPSIMSing my phone rather than Pitting it). It happens like this:
I type: just
As the cursor is still just at the end of the “t”, a suggestion box comes up suggesting “Judy”.
I then have to click on a little x at the corner of the suggestion box in order to reject it.
If I don’t reject the suggestion, “just” will change to “Judy” as soon as I hit the space bar to start the next word.
Of course, like a civilized human being, I pay attention to the results on the screen. If I accidentally allow a bad change to happen, I change it back.

And this is why I tryy to turn off autocorrect on all my devices and applications. Let it show me the red underline meaning \*“I think this is wrong” \*but let me make the call. Except that sometimes when there’s an upgrade or patch, it resets back to “default=ON”. Mightily annoying.

My phone does it differently. For the most part, it doesn’t auto-correct. Instead, as I’m typing it shows a number of suggested words below the text field and I can click on one if I choose to. If it doesn’t recognize a word it underlines it in red and I can correct it. There are two things that I’ve seen it correct (there may be others). If I type i, when I finish it (with a space or punctuation) it converts it to upper case. If I type ive, it corrects it to I’ve. Both of those make sense and are useful. I’m perfectly happy with no other auto-correcting. It’s one of these reasons I’ve resisted upgrading. I like the text functionality on this phone.

The one I find most annoying is if I slightly fat-finger ‘the’, or anything else beginning with ‘t’ and it comes up as ‘TTY’.

This is the first and only time I have not deleted it, as I never ever want to type that, and I’m not even sure what it means (talk to you?) but damn does it like predicting that.

I try not to get too annoyed about it though, because come the singularity, this thing kinda knows all my secrets, so I don’t want to upset it.

My iphone for some reason thinks I type proper French names a lot. I know no French people. I know no French. I’ve never tried to learn French. Why would you autocorrect random misspellings to French surnames?

> The worst autocorrect I’ve seen was in NeoOffice. I typed “Friday, 7 November 2014”, and it autocorrected it to “11/7/14”. It wouldn’t even let me undo the “correction”: Every time I undid it, it would just immediately re-“correct” it. I had to go search out that option (with help from Google) and turn it off before I could proceed. Why on Earth would I even be typing it out the long way, if I wanted it short? If anything, it should be correcting the other direction.

If this is in a spreadsheet, you have to redefine the field as “text” instead of “date.”
