Is anyone else tired of these annoying commercials (pretty much only shown on cartoon chanells)? 11 inch dolls, all “singing” about their hair, their boots, their gf’s. So annoying-the songs that is, not to mention its teaching girls its all about hair and clothes, etc. I know I’m not much of a ranter, and this will get a 1 or 2 points, but i Hate this stupid thing! Then the song goes thru your head! My son makes up new lyrics-my butt my shut (he’s weird) ---

I’ve seen those. It makes me glad I’m not raising a girl with this kind of BS thrown at them. I enjoy teasing my son about how I’m going to buy him one for Christmas. ---

_sigh_ When I was little and playing with Barbies (well, I still play with Barbies, actually), we had the theme, “We Girls Can Do Anything.” Barbie was an astronaut, an executive, president, a doctor, etc. She had guts. Now she’s just a cute fashion star. What gives? ☹ ---

Well, okay, I collect them, and occassionally I’ll take them off the shelves, fix their hair, change their outfits, etc. Then I’ll put them back. ---

I like the story of the people who swapped voice chips in Barbies and Spider Man dolls. I would so kill to have a Spider-Man that says “Math is hard!” and a Barbie that says, “My Spidey-sense is tingling!” ---

I just read in my local paper’s business section that Barbie (or some Barbies at least) will be redesigned with a larger head and fuller lips – thus emphasizing even further the concept of an “airhead” with anatomical enhancements. Next, they’ll finally bring out the Billionaire Horny Old Geezer doll to justify all those Corvettes, and Beach Houses… ---

Actually, I’m coming to have new respect for Barbie. Really and no joke. I’ve mentioned this in an earlier thread. Barbie still does varied activities – I think you can still even get an astronaut Barbie. If you read the Barbie books (of _course_ there are Barbie Books. There’s Barbie _everything_!), she gets to be a veterinarian (several times over) and have other careers. In the CGI Barbie movies she gets to be THe Sugarplum Princess and Rapunzel. These are devious commercial decisions intended to get you to buy tons of Barbie gear, but I have to admit that they’ver thought through Barbie and her motivations – she’s no blonde bimbo in these. In the books and the films she has a little girl in charge (Kelly, or some other), who is obviously the person the girl playing with Barbie can identify with. In the books she seems to act like an advice-column guru to these kids. The kids get incvolved with Barbie in these activities, so it’s a teaching tool, too. All in all, nothing you can object to, aside from rampany consumerism. Thank God they got rid of that “Math is Hard!” thing with the talking Barbie – and you can be sure they won’t do it again. I’m waiting for the Computer Game of Math Help Barbie, myself. ---

The latest round of Little Tikes commercials are pretty bad as well. They have some sort of toy workbench that looks pretty cool. They show a little boy playing with it and Norm Abrams is doing the voice-over. But the girl one… :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes: It’s for a toy vanity complete with mirrors and toy makeup. Christie Brinkley does the voice-over, saying something about “getting gorgeous.” It shows the little girls flouncing and preening. Can I get another :rolleyes: ? ---

Kelly is supposed to be one of Barbie’s little sisters, like Skipper and another one whose name escapes me. Had to get a Kelly for my cousin once, as a holiday present.
