I would also add that there’s nothing particularly wrong with it if you’ve thought about it and decided that you want it and/or need it - just buying big houses because everyone else is doing it isn’t a great idea.

As others have said, that’s lovely. Can you afford it? Did you pay for it all yourself (or are paying for the mortgage all by yourself? ) You don’t mind the upkeep? Can you sell it again?

These are all things I find people don’t think about when they buy a house. i’ve been pressured all my life except for the last six years (ha!) to buy a house and I think people don’t realize what a mindboggingly scary purchase it can be!

Certainly I don’t set SDMB standards, now, do I?

In my opinion, rather than worrying about the financial stability of the situation, which sounds fine, I’d worry about her husband wanting to rush kids - it didn’t sound like she was driving that - when she seems to have a lot of life changes in the hopper right now. Maybe she IS completely onboard with the “must procreate now” in which case, more power to her.

We have a combined income of around $150K, no debt other than the mortgage, and three children. Yet we live in a dinky 2-bedroom, 2-bath house with a one car garage. And we’re fine.

Yes to all.

Don’t know… I was never “pressured” to buy a house. If I liked renting, I’d be renting. If I liked a small house, I’d buy a small house. If I liked to ride around in a tin can, I’d buy a “smart car”. Who’s pressuring you?
