When my grandfather died, his many coffee cans full of silver coins, as well as “collector” sets and commemorative coins were distributed among the 3 great-grandkids, my daughter being one. \*\*samclem \*\*offered me some good advice about the likely value of her share, and I just took them to a local coin shop armed with that information. I was treated fairly, I believe, and she ended up with about $5K. It came in very handy when she had to buy books in college. ---

Indeed. That’s why I suggested calling the NRA. The one thing they’d be _really_ good for is knowing the laws around guns and so forth. ---

The state affiliate, the [Illinois State Rifle Association](http://isra.org/about/contact.shtml), would probably be the better ones to contact for information. You could also contact the [Illinois State Police](http://www.isp.state.il.us/foid/) section that is responsible for issuing firearms licenses. ---

Getting a FOID card is a piece of cake. It’s about a million times easier than getting a driver’s license. You fill out a piece of paperwork, get a photo taken (or just cut up a polaroid[really]), and send it off. When your background checks out, you’re mailed your card. Then take the guns to a gun store. Please don’t dispose of the them. She’ll make money no matter what, but there could be something really valuable in there. The whole attitude about just wanting to be rid of them baffles me. ---
