My Trip to New York City

I’m not sure if that’s the case. When I read “I thought I was doing all the right things but my sister and I would be standing there waiting for the train to arrive and it would come from the opposite direction I was expecting to come from so I’d be worried that it was going in the opposite direction of where we were headed”, I infer that they found the correct platform, but the train came from a different direction than she expected. And what I’m trying to explain to her is that it doesn’t matter; who cares? Just find the right platform by looking at the signs, and whether the train comes from the right or the left doesn’t matter. It’s a classic case of making things too difficult.

While I do think friedo’s “Trains almost always drive on the right” is confusing and not really helpful, I do think he was on the right track (ha!) regarding what the OP was asking.

I’m still curious about the “second” Times Square stop.

There’s only one stop properly called “Times Square” and that is the one at 42nd St. (That one station has exits to street level all the way from 40th to 44th St, and 7th to 8th Aves, but it’s one stop.) Other lines do have their next local stop still within the Times Square area, like the 1, C, E and N & R, but those stops are just called “50th St” and “47th St.”
