Weird to me, too, but in an OK way. As in, she knows what you want - and that is way more romantic than some lame bunch of flowers.

i just KNOW my bloke is gonna give me a chainsaw for my birthday tomorrow, and that totally rocks.

Machine-Gun?!?

QUITE a different thing GuanoLad. A shotgun and a rifle may be quite lethal, but they have legitimate uses as hunting tools for hobbyists. As a self-defense mechanism, a pistol even has legitimate use. A machinegun is only useful for actively killing people. It has little-to-no self-defense value (assuming you don’t live in the middle-east or something 😉 ), and is totally ineffecient for hunting.

As for getting a gun for an anniversary gift, you see, they just aren’t looking at it the way we do, as a GUN. But rather like golf clubs or a fishing pole, as has been already stated. Yes, I can see your point that an anniversary gift should be more romantic, but this is the WIFE’s gift to the HUSBAND. Assuming they have a fairly active sex life (not that it’s any of our business), it wouldn’t be unreasonable for him to expect more than her taking him to some hotel and putting on a new piece of lingerie or something. And a nice romantic evening (dinner, dancing) is really for the woman. Plus, you’re still kind of expected to get her jewelry or something as well.

What gift could you get a guy that would be romantic? Especially for a big event, like a marriage anniversary? Just saying golf clubs or some such seems perfectly reasonable to me.

**ivylass,**
I’ve been reading this thread to my wife, who finds it a real hoot. She said to be sure and mention the following:

- Two years ago, _she_ was the one who got a shotgun - over/under 20ga. The reasoning? So she could accompany me on the bird hunts and spend time with me.
- This year, she got a REALLY nice dinner out at a fairly exclusive steakery (hey, we’re in Texas - dead animal on the plate is part of the package). She is also getting a nice set of built-in bookshelves in the bedroom, and a new bathroom (bedroom shelves are finished, bathroom is in process).

Maybe these aren’t the most “romantic” things, but we tend to be fairly practical, and what’s more important - something temporarily sentimental, or something the other person REALLY wants? Personally, I like the idea that our gifts show that we actually pay attention to each other… 🙂

- Dirk

YESSSSS!!!

I got the chainsaw! I got the chainsaw!

I’m not sure who wins the actual coolest present award, but we clearly think similarly about romance and presents.

Well Dirk, that’s a really cool gun. Me and my wife celebrate our 14th anniversary in three weeks. In 1995 I was in an automobile accident and was in the hospital for six and a half weeks. For six and a half weeks she slept on a cot beside my bed. While I was still in the hospital, though, she had someone go to our house, remove all the guns, and sell them and I had quite a collection, it paid the mortgage that month. She was afraid that I would try and kill myself and she was right. You see, it took me about a year to learn to walk.

Ah, but to us snobs, the distinction is _very_ important. Kinda like calling a palimino ‘grey’ in front of a horse enthusiast. 'Tisn’t done, my man. 😉

The real question is, “What does he owe her for the next 20 years”🙂

She bought him a GUN OHMFG how unromantic blah blah blah. She bought her husband a gift that he really wanted, that he probably never would have bought for himself, and probably wouldn’t expect. How is this different than a car, nice ring, watch, dinner, computer, massage, good bottle of scotch? Nothing! It is more than a shotgun folks, it is a symbol, same as any other gift. If you can’t understand that, then I guess I just don’t understand either. It’s a gun. Get over it.

And it just happens to be one beautiful shotgun. One that I would never buy for myself but… (wife, if you are reading this… think XD-40).

Congrats on your anniversary Dirk! 13 years… 13… unlucky… remember what I said about you owing her:) May it last another 13!

October 5th is our 2 yr anniversary-- I was hoping to get some good gift ideas, but no such luck. Just for the record, I’d like to say that I’m Texan and I think guns are strange anniversary gifts too. But to each his own-- glad you liked your gift.

Guess I’ll have to go with that car CD player. (He likes music–used to be a music major–and hates his long commute to work.)

Yeah, gotta agree, the giving of guns as an anniversary present baffles me.
