I can’t buy that the storage space was an issue. When did MySpace stop being significant? From then to now, by what factor has hard drive space plummeted in cost? If they could afford it then, then surely they can afford one ten thousandth of the cost now.

Google+ is a bit different though; we’ve known about its impending closure for close to a year. Did MySpace send out any kind of maintenance notification? Not every site or app does that (even though they should!), but such a notice would be a sign of a considerate, professional IT department.

No, they didn’t. Which is consistent with this being a mistake.

People upthread are speculating that the “mistake” claim is cover for MySpace wanting to delete a bunch of stuff but not wanting to take the PR hit of deleting it. Which is just a wacky conspiracy theory.
