> Let me get this straight. Another poster looks up the definition of a word in a dictionary and has the audacity to actually believe the definition as stated in said dictionary and THAT is what has been causing all of these pages of back and forths?
>
> If I understand **brazil** correctly (and I apologize ahead of time, I’ve only now returned to posting regularly after a long absence, so **brazil** is not familiar to me and I could be completely off base). At any rate, based upon his posts, all he is saying is that “Dictionaries are accepted means of finding out what word “X” means. So, if a person can’t rely upon a commonly accepted source of definitions, where ARE they supposed to get the correct information? A random and anonymous person on a chat board is a more logical and accurate source than a dictionary?”

Hey, the same goes to any, even you. It is noticeable that you would consider the US census and Hispanic cites to be random. Another doper on Great Debates told me it suspected I was an artificial intelligence for finding items that contradicted their sources many times. So, leaving silly attempts at insulting me the point is that the dictionary needed to be called wrong because \*\*brazil84 \*\*considers that not answering with a yes or no answer to be just weaseling.

Since you are not him, I can tell you that the correct answer is that the dictionary is not very clear because indeed Brazil can be included in Latin-America, but not in Hispanic-America. The cited dictionary points on other locations that the emphasis on related words is in the **Spanish** , the language spoken in the nations that are also in Latin-America. Brazil is not considered part of Hispanic-America, they speak Portuguese.

> That dictionary does make the emphasis in the “Spanish-speaking” part in related terms. It is clear that even there “Latin-America”, in their Hispanic definition, is referring to the “nations that speak Spanish”

That’s completely false. The same web site from which I got the definition for “Hispanic” gives the following definition for “Latin America”:

> [@](#):
>
> The part of the American continents south of the United States in which Spanish, Portuguese, or French is officially spoken.

Are you seriously claiming that this doesn’t include Brazil?

> [@](#):
>
> It is the Etymology, so yes;

That’s fascinating, because the word “Hispanic” actually derives from the word “Hispania” which referred to the entire Iberian penninsula, including the Kingdom of Portugal. At least according to Wikipedia.

> [@](#):

> Like if that would be important after it is clear that you are just a poser.

The fact that you completely misunderstood my point? If the fact that you do not understand my post does not matter, then why do you bother responding?

I’m happy to drop it. Just stop trying to argue, in effect, that my understanding was unreasonable (not just you) and I will stop showing that you are wrong.

I already did say that Brazil is included in Latin America, but not Hispanic-America.

That, and the rest is just the 12th time that you demonstrate that you are not capable of following your own advice, I will not reply to this item now as even in the GQ thread on this you are wrong.

Okay, getting back to the OP. . . .

I guess the question would be whether your association (didn’t know if “relationship” was the right word) with this girl is valuable enough to you to put up with the nonsense. 'Cause my guess is that you’ll get more crap like what she sent you, unless you just cut her off.

Eh, I dunno about that. I’ve known her for almost 20 years and this is the first time I recall her expressing this attitude. I know this is sacrilege to the current American zeitgeist, but I think there are worse things than being a racist. I’m not going to automatically drop someone for it, unless they’re particularly venomous, action-oriented about it, or repeatedly prove themselves incapable of shutting the fuck up about it. I think we all have racist friends and family but _ours_ are acceptable for some flimsy excuse or another; _everyone else_ should drop theirs, immediately.

Isn’t using “racist” and “coward” in the same sentence a repetitive redundancy?

No, but repetitive redundancy is :p.

One of my friends from work told me a racist joke, and I told him I didn’t think it was funny, that I didn’t share his views. I don’t remember my exact words, but I let him know directly and immediately. I applaud you for taking the time to express to your friend that you don’t agree with her opinion. It is possible to remain friendly with people after disagreeing.
