# Mythbusters: Going Down The Tubes?

I get the feeling that this once great show is about to be cancelled. First: the increasingly stupi stuff they are doing-last night, they were attempting to measure the content of farts…along with seeing if you could waterski behind a college racing scull. The show used to be clever and funny…but it has degenerated into stupidity.
Anyone care to be how long it will last? :smack:

That’s an old episode (or maybe it’s a revisit of some sort?) The racing scull one originally aired in January of 2004.

I pitted that episode way back when ‘cause the science on the bridge part was so incredibly abysmal. I was so disgusted, I havent’ watched it since. Maybe if they do enough episodes, they’ll finally manage hit upon every topic they could get wrong and alienate all their viewers.

I had the same problem when I first saw it- it was the one where they tried to see if a bridge could collapse due to soldiers marching in time. The science was horrible, and I hated them for a while.
But once I lightened up a little and realized that this was nothing more than an entertainment show, I really warmed up to it. They may claim that they definitely confirm or bust a myth, but there’s a huge tongue-in-cheek element to it. Watch Mythbusters like you would _24_ or _Lost_- fun as hell to watch, lots of things go boom, but if you take it too seriously, your brain will start to weep in the corner.

Exactly. Things go boom or catch fire, sometimes something gross happens, Adam and Jamie caper around and say amusing things, and Buster gets whacked. _Those_ are the things I watch _Mythbusters_ to see, not serious science. (Some viewers also like to see hot interns) If you watch it expecting serious science, you’re going to be disappointed.

I caught a recent episode…umm, recently. It was the one with painting the house using dynamite. Maybe it was just the nod to Mr. Bean, but I thought it was decent. I was suprised, though, at the extremely stupid little spliced segments with their little “helpers” testing the internet-purchased mind control devices. It was pretty much the most idiotic things I’ve seen in a long time. And to make things worse, their final assessment was 3 “Busted”, 2 “Plausible”. Give me a fucking break!

Then they go and do a show that I like. Do pickup trucks get better gas milage with the tail gate up or down. Watch it for the fun and games of things that go BOOM. Once in a while they sneak in a good one.

When my wife is kind enough to go out and buy me an issue of “FHM” just so I can scrutinize Kari’s, um, scientific assets, then I say the show, and all associated with it, is headed in the right direction. 😃

Actually, Adam and Jamie were speakers at the local university maybe a month ago. According to them, Discovery is more than thrilled with them. Called them “the face of the network.” They aren’t going anywhere for a while.
As for the science, Jamie’s wife is a science teacher. She’s not to thrilled about their science either. 😉 The guys know it though. They aren’t scientists and they don’t pretend to be. They’re just happy trying to figure these things out and how to test the myths.
They’re touring the country now doing speeches and such. You should see them if you get a chance. Very entertaining.

So **ralph124c** maybe you’ll consider it a good thing that a member of the SDSAB is going to be helping them.
I like the show as much now as when it started. The Science and testing methods occasionally make be go WTF, but the show is fun and so much better than most of TV.

Yeah, they really don’t know squat about a lot of basics. But that goes way back. They “busted” the radio thru fillings thing (which actually happened to me). Their knowledge of how a radio works is practically zero.
The biggest problem with recent episodes is that the “build team” stuff is just pointless. Who cares about vodka myths? Waaay too much time wasted there.
It’s all about blowing stuff up, crashing cars, and doing horrible things to Buster. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
The fact that Adam can build a working rocket from “old style” materials in 2 days is amazing. That is the cool stuff they should stick with.

I just thought they’ve been running really thin on material. A lot of the “myths” they test now are just stuff that you see in TV and movies that common sense tells you wouldn’t work.

Yeah, I remember when they tested the “myth” about catapulting illegal immigrants over the border. Nobody had ever heard of such a myth before, and quite a few Dopers accused Mythbusters of making up the story themselves.

There’s always Brainiac as an alternative. Even less science content and rigourousness. OTOH, they often skip right to the explosions.

That FHM spread of Kari was cool, but I wish there was more to it. She has some very nice ass…ets that weren’t emphasized at all unfortunately. I have a major crush on her, though - she’s not even in the top 100 of random hot TV chicks in pure terms of looks, but she has something about her that makes her amazingly hot.
