You can add Scott Gomez to the list. First native Alaskan to play in the NHL, with the added twist of being of Columbian and Mexican descent making him the first Latino to be drafted and play as well. Two Stanley Cups to his name, as well, which qualifies him as famous, I would think.
As for where I was born:
A few NHLers: Pierre-Marc Bouchard, Éric Bélanger, David Perron, Matheiu Dandenault, Yanic Perreault, Christian Dubé
Jean Charest, Québec Premier (and former federal MP and leader of the Progressive Conservative party/Deputy Prime Minister)
Singers: Jim Corcoran and Garou
Northrop Frye
Harry Saltzman (producer of James Bond movies)
And from nearby, Joseph-Armand Bombardier, inventor of the Ski-Doo and namesake for the Bombardier companies: BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products) which makes Ski-Doos, Sea-Doos, Spyders, ATVs, etc and Bombardier which make airplanes and trains.
Going by where I live now (city of Utrecht, the Netherlands):
Gerrit Rietveld (architect and designer) Dick Bruna (very well known writer & illustrator over here. Probably best known as the inventor of Miffy) Silvia Kristel who I didn’t know was from here - star of the first two Emmanuelle movies (not to be confused with the inferior Emanuelle movies - note spelling).
Kathy Mattea (country singer, born in South Charleston, grew up in Nitro)
Conchata Ferrell (actress in Two and a Half Men, born in Charleston)
Carl Lee (NFL cornerback, was in my class at South Charleston High School)
Brad Whitford
Chris, Kevin & John Farley
Chris Noth
I found out a couple years ago that Brad Whitford’s father and I had the same employer. I spoke to him on the phone occasionally but had no knowledge of the connection until after his retirement.
