I once stopped calling a girl who expressed serious disdain for Seinfeld. All I could think was, she doesn’t think Seinfeld is funny. What could I possibly have to say to this creature? On the flipside, my readily shared, complete and utter boredom with _The Matrix_ continues to elicit odd looks from folks. I’m sure I’ve been crossed off more than a few people’s lists for that one. A lot of critics have expressed a high opinion of the TV show “Everybody Loves Raymond.” It’s an obvious moron sitcom – anybody who likes it is off my list of people worth listening to. ---

You know, Moody Bastard, I was going to start a thread similar to this. I used to say things like ‘There are two types of people in this world, those who liked Titanic and those with good taste.’ You can interchange ‘those who liked Titanic’ with whatever I was into/disliking at the time. I’ve since learned to get over myself (somewhat) and at least _appear_ to give them a chance. Here’s my list though: \*\*Name a person’s like/dislike that instinctively makes you write them off \*\* Likes _Friends_ Kraft Mac and Cheese Kraft American ‘Cheese’ Singles Soap Operas _Everybody Loves Raymond_ _Titanic_ Nick DiPaolo Dr. Phil Cheap clothes Dislikes _Pulp Fiction_ _Futurama_ Sushi (only if they haven’t tried it and won’t even give it a whirl because they thinks it means raw fish) Jazz Black people Reading (the verb, not the borough in England or the city in Pennsylvania) ---

I myself think Friends and Sitcoms in general suck big time… but I have never taken that against anyone. 🙂 There are other things that turn me off… people expressing conservative views on women, relationships or sex. (yep I am a man). People saying generalized statements that indicate ignorance: “oh… I hate history”. Too much worry about makeup, clothes or fashion too. Positive things are people who seem to be more carefree and also more accepting of differences. Women that can discuss anything deep are a major turn on… be it philosophy or politics. ---

If someone doesn’t like The Simpsons, I immediately think there must be something wrong with them. Usually, I just assume they’re kind of dumb.:o On the opposite side, people I know think there’s something wrong with me because I don’t like The Matrix, Sex and the City, Friends etc. ---

Turn-offs: People who don’t like to read! How is that possible? People that aren’t adventurous in their eating habits. Misogynists. People who are “scared” to go to the doctor or dentist. ---

People who think they know everything about everything. I have this co-worker, who will be talking on a subject that I happen to know about, and she is saying wrong or misinformed “information” and I tell her the err on her part and she doesn’t want to hear the real information. So people like that I write off totally. ---

Total write-offs: Bigots of any persuasion. The Terminally UnInformed. People who don’t read. Anybody who listens to Celine Dion. Anybody who listens to Bill O’Reilly. Anybody who listens to Al Franken. The Dogmatically Certain. All of the above just aren’t worth the effort. ---

There are only a couple of things that put you into my do not date/befriend list. First and foremost is any strong belief in Astrology, crystals, psychic healing or New Age mystical nonsense. I freely admit to being a bigot, but the lack of critical thinking drives me nuts. I don’t think I could date someone who didn’t like ethnic food. I just wouldn’t know where to go out to eat. And as eating is a large part of my life I think that would put me into system shock and I would shut down. Fortunately I am married and she passes both tests. ---

Anyone who likes dance music or showtunes (an occassional one is fine). Anyone who has no interest in politics or current events. Anyone who is a (for lack of a better or non-offensive term) bible thumper. I’m sure my prejudices have lost me meeting or getting to know some wonderful people. ☹ ---

As a Red Sox fan, and a Tony Stewart fan, I used to say that I could never, ever date someone who was a Yankee fan, or a Dale Earnhardt Jr fan. My date for Friday night is a Dale Earnhardt supporting Yankee watcher. Go figure! ---

What about people who wouldn’t really know if Seinfeld was funny or not, because they’d never owned a Teevee? The only people I will truly cross off my “social interaction” list are those who relate to the world only in terms of what they watched on teevee this week, and those run a near continuous sexist, racist commentary, with added nuggets about everything that’s wrong with this country. And Heroin Addicts. I’ve never met any of those, but it seems like a good rule of thumb.
