Re:Hitchhiker’s Guide. This is just one example of how having to live with someone else’s obsession can push you over the edge.
It may be a fine film, but when you have to listen to someone (in my case, a now-ex) dissect it frame by frame ad nauseum…ack! Never again!

> Always strange to see people talking about “torture porn.” I can’t think of many genres (real or made-up) that prompt such reactions - not just the lofty dismissal of movies one hasn’t seen and is therefore unqualified to comment on, but also insults leveled at people who enjoy them.

It’s say the subject is worthy of a [whole separate thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=14367902).

I started watching John Carpenter’s Vampires, and it was so awful that it would take a great deal more money than anyone would ever offer me to get me to torture myself with that nonsense. Ten grand, maybe? Certainly no less than 5.

Well, seeing as I have at home a shelf of Studio Ghibli movies, with the rather notable exception of _Grave of the Fireflies_, I think my nomination should be clear.

To quote Meatloaf: “I’d do anything for love… but I won’t do that”. Money on the other hand… if offered in sufficient quantity…

Just to be clear – I saw the trailer for Grave of the Fireflies and swore offf seeing it because I just know I’d find it emotionally wrecking… and I still cannot believe that it was originally released in Japan as a double feature with _My Neighbor Totoro_.

(Big fan of Studio Ghibli… and my son’s current fav movie is Miyazaki’s _Castle of Cagliostro_; I think we’re raising an _otaku_). 🙂

Ditto on both, although I’ve never really thought about torture porn, so I actually came in here to say _Forrest Gump_. I’m glad I’m not the only one. I think it’s vile.

_Dances with Wolves
Brokeback Mountain
Chicago

> Wow, got it in one. I can’t imagine a circumstance that would compel me to watch it, even if all I loved were in peril. If I run into someone who said that they wanted to watch it - I would forever be leary of them.

Well, I watched “The Human Centipede,” but I watched it for technical reasons. My theory was that it was somebody’s Rule 34 fantasy made into a film, and I wanted to see if it had a porny feel or if it trended more toward horror. It trended more toward horror, but it was nothing like as nasty and graphic as films like Hostel. It’s just the central concept of The Human Centipede that’s horrific, the sight of three people kneeling and walking around like they are stitched together was not all that horrifying, except for the sutures, which were small beer on the modern horror scale.

I didn’t find it as horrific as I expected, but then, I’ve seen Hostel 2. (For the record, having seen Hostel 2, I don’t think “torture porn” is all that different from modern horror films … say, Wolf Lake for example. Both are plenty nasty enough that I don’t care for either genre. And Wolf Lake has been on the SciFi Channel … and if Wolf Lake is OK fare for the SciFi Channel, then so it the Human Centipede – though truth to tell, neither of them are OK for any channel.)

That said, I completely understand your lack of interest in The Human Centipede … having seen it, I completely lack interest in it, too. I can assure you that you have not missed a thing by not seeing it. (OK, there is a nasty little horror twist at the end, but it’s hardly worth watching the rest of the film.)

Actually, though I normally hate girl flicks, 27 dresses actually wasn’t entirely bad . I sort of had to watch it, it was playing in the hospital Er last time I got stuck there for a few weeks one afternoon.

I haven’t seen it, but my understanding is that the sequel runs with exactly that premise: the new bad guy is sexual obsessed with the first film.

I think that I would watch anything, if you offered enough. The one you’d have to offer me the most for is **A Serbian Film** , partly because it’s one of the few torture porn’s that aren’t so violent and gory as to be stupid and cheesy, and also because…uh…well…newborn porn. And if that isn’t horrifying enough, the movie somehow manages to do things that are _even worse_, which I didn’t even know was possible.

gah.

how many people actually read the OP or thread title carefully before rushing in with their smug declarations that they will never, ever, watch titanic, or twilight, or harry potter, or movies starring an actor they dislike, or a genre they’ve deemed worthless, blah blah blah blah?

i read the OP to mean exactly what it says: specific films, that if offered money, power, true love, whatever you like, that you will not under any circumstances watch. i don’t care for twilight, at all, but i’m broke. i’d sit through the movie for $20. hell, i’d do it for $10.

[here’s](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audition_%28film%29) a movie i would not ever watch of my own free will. i’ve only ever heard of this movie from the dope, and even reading the description on wiki was a bit much for me. i cannot abide scenes of graphic violence and torture, and i’m another who avoids the hostel and saw films due to this. i’m not judging those movies to be badly done, because i haven’t seen them. in fact, from what i’ve heard and read saw is actually a decent series of films, but the subject matter is too much for me.

the whole meme of avoiding a certain movie or franchise because it’s popular is just so, so tired. no one’s impressed by your rebellion. you seriously wouldn’t watch titanic, twilight, or whatever the source of your hatred is under any condition, up to and including monetary gain? (maybe of more than $10, though, titanic’s a long movie). seriously, though. you want a shitty titanic movie, watch [the italian animated ripoff of cameron’s film.](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titanic:_The_Legend_Goes_On)

i’m not saying everyone has to run out and watch movies they’re not interested in. everyone has different taste, and that’s fine. but to immediately discredit something just because it’s popular is pretentious and annoying. a lot of movies i adore now were ones i was initially not interested in- star trek (the 2009 film), star wars (original) and monty python, to name a few. i gave them a chance, and i liked them. funny how that works!

I understand that Hitler had the executions filmed of some of the people convicted in the July 1944 bomb plot. Apparently at least some of them were strung up and strangled with piano wire. That’s one film you couldn’t pay me enough to watch. But… you could pay me enough to _pretend_ to watch.

Ah… there you go. I hadn’t considered “non-fiction.” My wife watched the Daniel Pearl execution video and regretted doing so. I couldn’t. I don’t think I could watch that one for almost any price.

my idiot roommate at the time pulled that video up in front of me trying to get me to watch it. i left the room. no way, no how.

this is tv, but i won’t watch the last act of the episode of law and order svu where olivia goes undercover in a women’s prison. the attempted rape scene is just a little too raw and realistic for me to stomach.

That’s another good example. I’ve never gone searching for the various jihadist execution videos because I have no interest in watching just how horribly people can treat each other in real life. And if America or some other country started televising state sponsored and presumably less spectacular/bloody executions, I wouldn’t watch those either.

For at least 10€ an hour, I’d watch just about any movie to the end. It’s certainly better than doing my actual job which pays less. Only exception is footage of real-life torture/murder stuff (don’t know if that counts as a “movie”).

(bolding mine) How do you know that? Did they come in just before the scene and leave just after, or were they fapping during the scene, or something?
