Taylor Swift doesn’t sing country music.

She sings slightly twangy pop music.

> That being said, I absolutely LOVE Taylor Swift. Given my tastes, there’s no objective reason why I should, especially considering that the rest of my musical tastes tend towards hard rock and heavy metal. Nonetheless, I started hearing her songs on the radio a few years ago and went out and bought “Fearless” because of it. I’ve since bought all of her albums (even her Christmas album!) and bought seventh-row tickets to see her live, where I must have been the only adult heterosexual male who wasn’t there chaperoning his 12-year-old daughter.

I hadn’t intentionally heard her before seeing the _60 Minutes_ piece on her, but I remember reading a New Yorker profile on her a few years back that that made the case for her as a serious songwriter. A critic on the _60 Minutes_ piece said that she would get a lot more respect if she weren’t young and cute.

I can see that. I’m a huge Kate Bush fan, and early on there was a percentage of the public who thought that there was no way that this beautiful woman could possibly be anything other than the creation of the record industry.

The part on _60 Minutes_ about her relationship with her fans nearly brought me to tears, spending an hour on a meet’n’greet before each show, and having people out in the audience rewarding her most enthusiastic fans with backstage passes.

One of the things I admire about Country music is the genre’s appreciation of their fans. It’s my wife’s story, and I hope she won’t mind me using it, but when she was a little girl, she went to the Kansas State Fair. Lorette Lynn was playing the arena, but she didn’t have tickets. So she and a few other kids climbed to the top of a tractor and were able to see over the fence and watch the concert.

And Loretta Lynn came over after the show to sign autographs for the kids on the tractor who couldn’t afford tickets to her show.

I saw [Suzy Boggus](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fM_jnS-MjY) live in concert, and her cover of _Someday Soon_ did bring me to tears. I was also impressed with how sweet and nice she was both before the show and with her fans after the show. The only problem I have with Taylor is that I don’t know if she is being AutoTune tweezed.

> Why’s that? Admittedly, I don’t know much about his personal life, but I do know he’s done a lot of good work for New Orleans post-Katrina.

That’s a HUGE part of the reason I can’t stand the attention-whoring asshole; I myself have flown down to New Orleans 40+ times over the past 16 years, (3 times so far in 2011, and I am heading back down next weekend) so you can probably tell that the city obviously means a LOT to me…

When there are cameras around, Brad & Angelina can always be found swinging a hammer and demolishing condemned houses, or working in a soup kitchen feeding the hungry masses, or passing out fresh butane lighters to the deserving crackheads on Canal St., but it’s always all about THEM and their neverending need for publicity and public adulation.

All of my local N.O. friends say Brad & Angelina are shameless self-promoting narcissists, who use New Orleans as a prop setting for their own personal publicity, and nothing more.

I dislike most rap (except for the nerdcore sub-genre), but Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” is awesome.

Another vote for not liking country and bluegrass all that much.

But I can listen to [Alison Krauss](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvKtxTsVoMo) and [Union Station](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuGJaU25ZIA) and [Terri Clark](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFznUWSffko) for long periods of time.

I don’t like country either, but the answers in this thread suggest that maybe there’s much more to country than our prejudices tell us.

I can totally see that working as a synth-rock song (like the harder-rocking Duran Duran songs.)

Yes. And I’m in the ‘hate country love Taylor Swift’ camp. But I really like this thread because it seems to demonstrate that Dopers are open-minded humans. How many people have we known who hate all \_\_\_ so they would never read, watch or listen to \_\_\_?

I think there was one Eminem\* song that I liked the \*sound \*of about 5 or 6 years ago, until I read the lyrics and there was a line something about “like TP for your butthole” or something like that which just turned me off completely so I can’t even count that song anymore.

\*I think. I could be wrong about who it was.

Another C&W loather here, but by accident I watched a Glen Campbell programme and was amazed by how many of his songs I really enjoyed.

Especially Wichita Linesman and Galveston.

More likely ‘TP for your _bunghole_’, which is a Beavis and Butthead reference, which would most likely make it an Eminem song because that’d be right up his alley.

Might well have been–it still made the lyric repugnant to me and rendered me unable to enjoy the song beyond that point.

This from the person who recently shared with the entire SDMB that she only enjoys watching pornography that features extensive footage of anal sex…

A) I never said “extensive footage” I only admitted that I enjoyed anal sex in porn.
B) Since when does anal sex equate with wiping shit from one’s anus? Sorry, but I’ve got a bidet that makes my asshole nearly as clean as getting out of the shower. If you’re dealing with shit-covered anal sex that’s your own problem, not mine.
