Name any good recent Sci Fi movies

Yes! I went into that expecting it to be a real fucking stinker.

But I was surprised in that it just kept chugging along and never really fell flat.

I liked it and am looking forward to the sequel. I think it is called Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. It is supposedly pretty good!

Riddick was my best movie of 2013.
**
Edge of Tomorrow** is quite good.

Moon was also pretty good.

On the other hand, The Signal (different movie) is an interesting little horror flick.

I’ll second Dredd. I don’t think you need to be too familiar with the comic though. I mean you get a vague sense that Dredd is some sort of bad ass future cop. What more do you need to know?
Did no one like Elysium? It wasn’t as good as District 9, but still pretty decent IMHO.

I hated Elysium. Jodie Foster, cartoon bad guys, silly plot. It was as bad and cliched as District 9 was fresh and awesome.

I’m adding Dredd to my to-watch list. I’ve only heard good things about it.

It’s fun; think The Raid but with Judge Dredd. And Karl Urban does a fairly good job of being Dredd. I don’t think he’s the definitive incarnation or anything, but he had the attitude down pretty well. I wish his voice was more like Stallone’s tho; I did like Stallone’s voice for Dredd even tho every single other aspect of that movie was shite.

ETA: Oh yeah, and the villain in Dredd is scary. Seriously scary.

Dammit, I wanted to add Cargo to the list. I think the somehow the subtitles make it even more ominous.

That is exactly how I would describe it.

*Oblivion *is worth seeing. The story was good, and it was shot beautifully. I wish they would use those Sony F65 cameras for everything.

A couple of people now have said that Gravity might not count as science fiction. In what possible way is it not?

It’s not set in the future, but in the present day, doesn’t introduce any new tech or anything like that. Frankly it’s just an adventure story with a very exotic setting.

Yeah, but it’s about space and stuff! It’s science fiction!

Me too. I thought it was going to be extremely dumb, but I ended up being entertained. Much like the Hunger Games so far.

Let’s see, I liked:
Monsters (pay very close attention to the first 5 minutes)
Battle: Los Angles
Dark Skies
Skyline (your enjoyment might depend a lot on being an Eric Balfour fan, though)
Inception
Cloverfield
+1
Super 8
Triangle
Devil’s Pass (I liked it the list of the list)

So…mostly alien and/or monster invasions. Yeah. I’m not too into space or robots. I did not like District 9 or Avatar, though, despite the aliens.

Bonus Fantasy recs:
Alice
Running Scared (too many people don’t realize it’s a fairytale)
Heartless
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
Pan’s Labyrinth
Upside Down
Stardust

OK, what did I miss? Watched that movie and didn’t think much of it.

Most of the movie takes place after the first scene. The movie ends on what seems to be a hopeful note, given the rescue…but at the very beginning (which is minutes after the rest of the movie, chronologically) you very briefly see a man carrying an at least unconscious, possibly dead, woman in his arms. That unlucky couple happens to be Andrew and Samantha, who are the focal characters of the movie.

Well, technically it is Sci-Fi now because it posits a U.S. Space Shuttle program…

I also really liked Moon.

I hadn’t seen Cloud Atlas until yesterday (thanks to some involuntary time off), but it was the first movie that popped into my mind when seeing the question - a longish movie but it held my attention the entire time. Gorgeous cinematography. Looking forward to Jupiter Ascending.

Another vote for* Inception* as well.
