A monestary of chipmonks.
I think we should go back to the odvious idea posted by Laughing Lagomorph…
An Alvin of Chipmunks.
Dray is a baby squirrel. I just looked it up in my Handy Science Answer Book It only list animal groups, for animals that live in groups.
I was thinking Chippees since one that chips is a chipper. More than one is chippers…a group of chipmonks would be either chippers or chippees.
Unless you go with the Algonquian origin, chitmunk which would then make chitter OR chatter correct.
So, what say ye chitheads?
Whats the collective for us? A teem?
To Danalan: I’m sure Walt Disney is proud. Chip ‘n’ Dale were the names of his two mischievous chipmunks.
I vote for “chatter”
According to my dog, a grouping of chipmunks is called a snack.
sorry, ArtyDooDoo.
Shame on you all for not knowing… a group of chipmunks is properly referred to as The Rescue Rangers.
<cue cheesy 80’s Disney cartoon theme and opening credits with Chip and Dale in a boat>
Arty–
better subject line = better answers
My vote’s on chipmonastery.
Well I for one liked the answers!
Whats wrong with the subject line? And more important, whats wrong with the answers?
BMalion, you have a naughty dog!
Some of the collective names for groups of animals are traditional, and go back to Old English or even older roots. Others originated in the Middle Ages as hunting terms. Quite a few of the latter are rather fanciful, and were rarely or never used in practice. In Victorian times, it became a bit of a parlor amusement to invent such collective names. So a large percentage of such names are not “real” in the sense of having been actually used by any significant part of the population.
This said, this site gives a rather extensive list of such names.
Chipmunks are not listed. Since chipmunks are a type of squirrel, one could use either of the two words listed, “dray” which has already been mentioned, or “scurry.”
However, one would be equally justified in making one up.
I nominate a falsetto of chipmunks.
What’s wrong with it is that it’s too generic. You have to open the thread in order to get an idea what it’s about.
A better subject line might have been something like “What’s a group of chipmunks?” or “Word for group of chipmunks” or “Collective noun for chipmunks.”
Yes, I did concider that as my subject line but then it would have been a blank page once you entered and then some yahoo would have complained about that!
Anyway I’m still very pleased with the suggestions.
Personally I’ve adopted a chatter of chipmunks.
How do you figure?
This –
– which is what you yourself wrote – would still have served the purpose. Repetition is no crime in this instance.
Plus, if you take a leetle peek at the second thread in this forum,
you might see that the moderator makes this rather clear statement:
A Death Ray of Chipmunks?
The suggested names are too cute. The little rascals don’t get enough respect, and the last thing they need is yet another saccharine-sweet way to describe them.
I think we should call a group of chipmunks a platoon. Short for bloodthirsty platoon of jackbooted fur monsters.
You’re all that and a bag of chipmunks, ArtyDooDoo.
Considering that many urban chipmunks survive by eating garbage and peanuts tossed to them by humans, I nominate a “mooch” of chipmunks, with a large colony referred to as a “moochery.”
